Enrolment/Registration - 2024/2025

General Information

  • When an applicant is admitted to a cycle of studies/course at FEUP, whatever the admission regime, they have to enrol/register in the cycle of studies/course in which they were placed in order to become a student.
  • In the following years, before the beginning of the academic year, the student must register for curricular units within the deadlines established.
Registration in an academic year is valid with the submission of the registration form, automatically receiving “A Frequentar” status, incurring from that moment on in the payment of the annual tuiton fee applicable to the respective registration, which can be paid all at once, upon enrolment/registration, or in ten monthly instalments. For information on tuition fees, please refer to the University of Porto’s Tuition Fees Regulation.
Registration for an academic year/curricular units does not exempt students from selecting classes and timetables, and vice versa. For additional information about classes and timetables, please contact the secretariat/direction of the respective cycle of studies (see contacts on the page of the cycle of studies).
  • Students taking examinations on the 2nd call of the special examination period for completion of the cycle of studies or on the special examination period for students with special status, which have a timeframe for examinations that coincides with the first semester of the following academic year, have 10 working days from the date of publication of their last grade to regularise/adjust their registration for curricular units. To do so, they must go to the Academic Services and present their curricular units registration form validated by the Director of the Cycle of Studies. See information about Examinations.
  • Students can only register for curricular units of a given curricular year after having registered (mandatory) for all the curricular units of previous curricular years.
  • Master’s students who wish to register for Dissertation at the beginning of the academic year must have enough ECTS credits in that academic year to register for all curricular units they have pending to complete the cycle of studies.
  • Mobility OUT students cannot register at FEUP for curricular units included in their academic recognition commitment, or for curricular units of the mobility semester (thus, their name will not be listed in the corresponding register). In these cases, the ECTS limits mentioned at Rules for Full-time/Part-time Registration still apply.
  • Students who fulfil the conditions to benefit from a special regime should see information about Special Status.
  • If the study plan for your cycle of studies allows the registration for any curricular unit of the University of Porto, you will have to select the option "Incluir unidade curricular" (Add curricular unit) from the option box (right hand side of the screen) to see all the curricular units with places available at UP. After including the desired curricular unit, you will have to select and submit it in the registration proposal in order for the registration to come into effect. If the study plan allows the possibility to register for more than one curricular unit of the University of Porto, you must repeat this procedure. The curricular units selected will have their status conditioned, since they do not belong to the study plan, being subject to approval by the Director of the Cycle of Studies, as well as approved by Director of the Cycle of Studies in which the chosen curricular units belong.

Rules for Full-time/Part-time Registration

Full-time regime

At the University of Porto, full-time students can register for up to 75 ECTS credits per academic year, with a maximum of 42 ECTS credits per semester, except when registering in the first year for the first time in First Cycles of Studies, where those limits are 60 and 30 ECTS credits respectively (see the Regulation No. 844/2018, of 19th December - Regulation on the maximum number of credits a student can register for in each academic year and semester – only available in Portuguese).

In the year of completion of their cycle of studies, the annual limit can go up to 81 ECTS credits and up to 48 ECTS credits per semester in the cases where, with the approval of that limit, the student may complete the cycle of studies.

At FEUP, students can also register for curricular units up to 81 ECTS credits per academic year if they are registered in more than one cycle of studies/continuing training (they must not exceed the limit of 75 ECTS credits in their cycle of studies at FEUP, except in the year of completion of their cycle of studies).

Note: Language training is not taken into account for these ECTS credits limits.

Part-time regime

In accordance with the resolution of the General Board, dated 17th June 2019, students can register part-time as indicated in the following table:

Number of ECTS credits of the part-time registration
-Up to 18 ECTS credits
-From 19 to 37.5 ECTS credits
-From 38 to 40.5 ECTS credits*
-Registration exclusively for non-curricular component - research work and the writing of dissertation, thesis, internship or project, and corresponding reports.

*Only for students who have all the necessary registrations for the duration of the cycle of studies and who may complete it in the year/semester corresponding to these limits, as approved in the meeting of the Board of Deans of 6th November 2017.

Part-time
students can register for up to 37.5 ECTS credits per academic year in a given cycle of studies (see the Regulation for Part-time Student Regime of the University of Porto).

This does not apply to registrations for curricular units regarding research work and the writing of dissertation, thesis, internship or project, and corresponding reports, for which the number of ECTS credits exceeds the limit set out in the preceding paragraph. Since the fractionating of ECTS credits is not possible, the limit of 37.5 ECTS may be exceeded; however, the corresponding to two part-time registrations per curricular year will be taken into account for the purposes of minimum time for delivery of dissertation, thesis, internship or project, and respective reports.

Exceptionally, students who have all the necessary registrations for the duration of the cycle of studies and who may complete it with a registration for up to 40.5 ECTS credits may choose to register and attend part-time (in accordance with the resolution of the Board of Deans, dated 6th November 2017).

Note: Language training is not taken into account for these ECTS credits limits.

Any student who expressly states their wish to register in part-time regime at the beginning of the academic year, upon enrolment/registration, may do so.
The change of attendance regime from full-time to part-time, or vice versa, can only take place upon registration for the academic year, with the exception of student workers, who can request the change from full-time to part-time at the beginning of the second semester.

The part-time registrations considered for the purpose of enforcing periods of limitation shall always correspond to half registration (0.5 registration), regardless of the number of credits for which the student is registered.

The Regulation for Part-time Student Regime of the University of Porto does not apply to advanced studies, specialization courses, continuing training courses and units.
