Objectives
The project aims at the integration and application of knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired throughout the study cycle. The work will take place in a business or research environment, promoting the development of capacities for initiative, decision and group work.
The work developed should promote the analysis of new situations, collection of relevant information, selection of approach methodologies and tools for solving proposed problems, their resolution, preparation of a report and their public presentation.
Learning outcomes and competences
This curricular unit finalizes the students' academic path in the cycle of studies and aims to be a curricular unit integrating the knowledge acquired. The use of project themes proposed by companies or by coordinators of R&D projects and the monitoring model by a FEUP supervisor allow the learning objectives to be achieved.
In summary, the UC aims to help students in the transition to the next phase of their academic or professional career.
The supervision of the FEUP will adjust to the expectations of the student, the type and objective of the project and the institution where it will take place.
Students should also demonstrate awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) defined by the United Nations, integrating sustainability principles in engineering practices. That includes being able to identify the contribution of their work to environmental, social and economic aspects of the proposed solutions, aiming at a more sustainable and inclusive future, with projects and initiatives that are aligned with the SDG.

Program
The project is carried out on a part-time basis in an institution to be selected. A work programme is followed and carried out individually, based on the initial proposal selected by the student. In case there are several students on the same project, specific tasks should be assigned to each student, so that individual reports can be prepared by each student.
The project lasts about 20 weeks (6 ECTS - 162 hours), of which 16 weeks will be in the company and the remaining time will be dedicated to the preparation of the report, generally involving the following tasks:
- Detailed definition of the problem to be analysed
- Bibliographic research
- Development and/or application of model(s)
- Obtaining and quantifying the results obtained
- Preparation of the report
- Public presentation of the work
Within the scope of their project each student has a supervisor at FEUP and, whenever this takes place in a company or in an R&D institution, may also have a supervisor from that host institution.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Frequency presupposes:
1. Before the start of the CU:
- Receipt of proposals and approval of project themes and objectives;
- Allocation of projects to students;
- Assignment of the respective mentors;
- Schedule of the dates foreseen for the submission of the summary report of the work performed and public presentation.
2. During the occurrence of the CU:
- Guided execution of the project work. In the case of projects in a business environment, the work must be carried out in accordance with the rules of the host institution, particularly in terms of attendance and punctuality.
3. The final evaluation will be the responsibility of the FEUP supervisor assigned to the student, based on the technical-scientific quality of the work developed (Weight: 60%), the quality of the synthesis report (Weight: 30%) and the quality of the public presentation (Weight: 10%).
Participation in the congress is mandatory and involves the prior submission of a one-page abstract in English (via moodle) and a presentation structured in 3 sections (problem, solution and conclusions).

Eligibility for exams
The final evaluation will be the responsibility of the FEUP supervisor assigned to the student, based on the technical-scientific quality of the work developed (Weight: 60%), the quality of the synthesis report (Weight: 30%) and the quality of the public presentation (Weight: 10%).
Participation in congress is mandatory to obtain attendance to the course unit.
Calculation formula of final grade
60 % - Technical-scientific quality of the work developed (WD)
30 % - Quality of the synthesis report (SR)
10 % - Quality of the public presentation (PP)
Final classification formula (CF) will be:CF= WD + SR + PP
Participation in congress is mandatory to obtain attendance to the course unit.
