He is a specialist in Logistics Strategy and Supply Chain Management. Doctor (PhD, 1994) in Logistics Management and Master (MSc, 1989) in Distribution Technologies & Management, both from Cranfield School of Management, UK. Pos-graduation (1987) in Industrial Engineering and Management, INEGI, Portugal. Lincenciatura (Eng. 5 year degree) in Mechanical Engineering, FEUP, University of Oporto, 1986, Portugal.
He is Associate Professor at the Industrial Engineering & Management Department of the University of Porto’s Engineering School, teaching Logistics, Supply Chain Management and Corporate Strategy and Competitiveness. He is invited Professor of Logistics and Supply Chain Management at PBS - Porto Business School, in the International MBA, Executive MBA and other Executive Programmes.
He has gained large experience in the academic, industrial and consultancy environments. With INEGI (Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management) and PBS (University of Porto Business School) he has gained vast industrial experience. Responsible for a large number of consulting and research projects, with special emphasis on developing and implementing Supply Chain Management and Logistics Strategies, in both the Portuguese and the European context, for several sectors of activity (Covering Materials Industry, Retail and Modern Distribution, Glass Industry, Pharmaceutical Sector, Food and Beverage Industry, Healthcare, Public Administration).
He is currently the Executive President of the Board of INEGI (since March/2015).
He was the Executive Vice-President at INEGI from 2010 to 2015. At PBS - University of Porto Business School, he has held an Associate Dean and Member of the Executive Committee position from 2000 to 2009. At APLOG – Portuguese Logistics Association, he was the President of the Board from 2012 to 2018. He was the Industrial Engineering & Management program Director at FEUP from 1995 to 2000. He was the Logistics Management Master program Director at PBS - University of Porto Business School until 2007.
He publishes in a number of Journals in the field of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
