The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is based on the education and training of professionals in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, and related areas, at an international level, underpinned by Research and Development of globally recognised excellence and high-quality extension practice, covering scientific, technical, ethical and cultural aspects.

In addition, it organizes the Master in Product and Industrial Design in conjunction with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP).

In 1986, the Department created INEGI - Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering, which is a Technology and Innovation Center (CTI) dedicated to carrying out technology-based research and innovation activities, technology transfer, consultancy and technological services geared towards the development of industry and the economy in general. Teachers associated with the Department of Mechanical Engineering carry out integrated research projects in FCT units, namely, but not exclusively, those belonging to INEGI.
