  • Advanced Studies (3rd cycle) in Product Design and Development (60 ECTS credits)

Courses Units

Investment Project Analysis

EM0062 - ECTS Background

This subject deals with the analysis of one of the most important decisions in Corporate Finance - the allocation of funds to capital projects, in order to maximize firm value.

Specific Aims

To provide students with the knowledge of basic methodologies for the analysis of the financial and economic feasibility of investment projects, in certainty and uncertainty conditions.

Previous Knowledge

Basic accounting concepts; basic financial mathematics.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should:
know how to justify the decision making of real investments in companies, and be capable of analysing and elaborating Business Plans.

Creativity

MIET0002 - ECTS Provide the students with the abilities to
- understand the complexity of the creative capacity of a system,
- identify the cognitive abilities and behavior that enable the development of innovative proposals.
- understand the mechanisms and the different phases of the creative process.
- use the systematic heuristic tools with consciousness and flexibility : techniques for problem exploration, methods for idea generation and evaluation techniques.
- participate actively in a creative group.

Product Design and Development

EDDP0001 - ECTS This course aims to familiarize students with a cooperative and complementary reading of the process of design and product development based on assumption of differentiated targets to be achieved by the participants in each of the 3 scientific areas involved: Design, engineering and management.
Skills to develop: be part of a multidisciplinary team of project, in a more operative position facing the scientific competences. Monetize the different visions of product in a homogeneous and sustainable planning result.

From Market to Design

EDDP0003 - ECTS This course primarily aims to enable students to structure knowledge about markets and consumers
and related methodologies and techniques of analysis and study, allowing the inclusion of the
designer in the dynamics of markets and societies with the ultimate purpose of efficiency and success
of products, services and companies.
It is intended that students acquire the ability of market analysis at strategic, tactical and operational
levels, in different business contexts of product development, so that they can contribute to the
establishment of appropriate strategies to approach the market.

Total Quality Management

EIG0028 - ECTS To provide the students with the knowledge and skills required:
- To understand the fundamental and principles of quality control, quality assurance and quality management
- to model and analyze business processes
- to analyze and develop quality management systems according to ISO 9000 standard.
- to apply quality tools in manufacturing and product development.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship

MIET0004 - ECTS The labour market has suffered profound changes in the last few years, therefore it now calls for professionals who can act with independence, autonomy, flexibility, creativity, commitment and who can collaborate.
The strategic aim of this course unit is to spread an entrepreneur culture, by combining a set of technical and social skills, which are aimed to encourage the creation of new entrepreneurship or technological intra-entrepreneurship projects.
Thus, this course unit aims to contribute to the development of an entrepreneur attitude and to make students look closely to subjects related to the entrepreneurship process, by training them and giving examples.
The operational aims of this course unit are the following:
- To be capable of understanding the impact of entrepreneurship in economic and social development;
- To be capable of understanding the basic notions of entrepreneurship, its main concepts and recognising the entrepreneurship process;
- To develop skills related to the entrepreneurship process, involving a set of relevant subjects to the development of new companies and sustained innovation by existing companies.
- To develop skills of analysis and critical discussion of real situations of the entrepreneurship process.

Materials and Processes

EDDP0005 - ECTS Give the students a global vision of all available materials for project and manufacturing technologies for conception and manufacturing a specific product.
Frequently, this goal is solved with the synthesis of theoretical and practical knowledge obtained in several fields. One can include not only the aesthetic aspects, ergonomics, identity and manufacturing costs, but also the aspects related to the decision relatively to the materials to be used.
The no empirical choose of the materials in design is more efficient as more measurable is that process, which must consider:
- identification of service specifications
- identification of parameters to compare materials
- pre-selection of materials, in an iterative process with the manufacturing technology.
To consider these two aspects, materials and technologies, with safety, basic concepts of materials resistance and mechanical behavior of materials should be previously studied.
It happens often that the improvement of a property is accompanied by the degradation of others. So will be studying the polymer matrix composites, ceramic or metals as good compromise solutions to overcome the weaknesses of each isolated group of materials.
Also the natural composites like wood and cork will be studied physically and mechanically. It will address also the study of these composites as matrix composites with natural cases of laminated wood and cork agglomerates.
The manufacturing technologies will be addressed over the course in an integrated perspective and associated with materials.
Skills to develop
Basic selection of large groups of materials depending on the projectual context, their applicability and cost (compared with estimated number of parts to produce)
(It is understood that the selection of fine materials is the responsibility of the Development Engineering and in extreme cases require the involvement of a specialist in Engineering Materials by advocates who, when necessary, to resort early in the project the analysis model and cooperative decision in these matters).

Finite Elements Method

EM0065 - ECTS This course aims to give students an insight into finite element methods applied to the calculation of solids and structures.
At the end of the course, students should be capable of programming finite element methods to linear and non linear problems. They should also be capable of discussing about the development of new elements and should be able to interpret results of the most varied problems.

Cognitive Psychology

MCI0013 - ECTS 1. To present Cognitive Psychology as an area of knowledge to be integrated in the professional training of Information Sciences;
2. To identify the basic concepts of this area;
3. To analyse the implications of that knowledge in the specific area of Information Sciences;
4. To relate and apply that knowledge with the processes of information design and offer;

Skills
1. To be familiar with the fundamentals of Cognitive Psychology
2. To be familiar with the participating factors in information search and retrieval
3. To apply the acquired knowledge to the area of Information Sciences
4. To be capable of using scientific approaches and developing them
5. To be capable of analysing and summarising
6. To be capable of planning, organising and presenting the work developed individually or in group
7. Problem solving – to apply research results to new problems in the professional environment and be capable of organizing and planning research projects
