Library of the Faculty of Fine Arts

Biblioteca da Faculdade de Belas Artes

The Library of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, located in the central building, is associated to the historical evolution of the School. It originated from the libraries of the schools prior to it, namely: Aula de Debuxo e Desenho (1779), Academia Real da Marinha e Comércio (1803), the Academia Portuense de Bellas Artes (1836) and finally, the Escola Superior de Belas Artes (College of Fine Arts), which is our predecessor.

The Library acquires, catalogues, classifies and indexes works and documentation which are considered relevant to the activities of the Institution. Its general objectives are to preserve, provide and disseminate existing documental resources and offer support to the members of the Faculty and other users that request its services. The document collection is free to access and open to all. It is organised by thematic areas that correspond to the content of the courses taught at the Faculty. It keeps about 20 000 volumes which include monographies, periodicals and dissertations. Also, it owns 11 000 slides, 160 audiovisual material and 50 electronic documents.

The old collection comprises about 780 works in the period between the 16th and 19th century, which includes some of the first treaties on architecture. It also contains a significant collection of periodicals, most of them from the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century.
