Library of the Faculty of Sciences

The Library of the Faculty of Sciences owns a valuable document collection, which has a history that dates back to the establishment of the University of Porto and the creation of this Faculty in 1911. The Library is currently organised in a departmental structure with dependent offices. It was instituted in 2012, and it is the result of an ambitious project that aimed at integrating collections of the departmental libraries, of the dependent offices and of the Library of the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology – IMBC. This project was also dedicated to the transformation of the physical space and to the adaptation to new requirements.

The concept of the Library was improved to include its role as an instrument of integration that supports FCUP’s mission and, on a broader level, to be a functional component of the global infrastructure committed to the preservation and dissemination of knowledge and culture. This improvement was necessary due to an increasing interdisciplinarity of the scientific areas found in FCUP, the new organisation requirements associated to the development of information technologies (which have a structural impact on the Library’s organization and operation) and also due to the need for an optimised use of resources.
