Objectives

Knowledge of basic nutritional needs for a good health and of the more frequent deficiencies/errors and their relationship with pathology. Knowledge of food-related behaviour determinants with impact in human health.

Ability to identify the main nutrient classes and essential nutrients; to understand the mechanisms involved in the control of the appetite; ability to recognize relationships between metabolism and nutritional recommendations; to characterize malnutrition and obesity; ability to evaluate nutritional needs and indications for nutritional support; be able to emphasize the relevance of nutrition knowledge on preventive medicine and also on disease treatment.

Learning outcomes and competences

Competências: Identificar as principais categorias de nutrientes e, dentro destas, os nutrientes essenciais; descrever os mecanismos de controlo do apetite; relacionar o conhecimento do metabolismo com as recomendações nutricionais; caracterizar situações de malnutrição e de obesidade; avaliar as necessidades e indicações de suporte nutricional. Ser capaz de enfatizar a relevância do conhecimento da Alimentação e Nutrição Humanas na Medicina Preventiva, bem como no tratamento da patologia.

Teaching methods and learning activities

A written test, with an essay on a theme to be chosen between two (or more) proposals. Students may answer the test immediately at the end of the work or later, at the end of the year. The student has to attend at least two thirds of the working sessions and obtain a classification of at least 10 out of 20 points in the test to be approved.
