Mission: | The department has three main goals: under and post-graduation teaching, basic and translational research and science diffusion. The department coordinates several curricular units: Biochemistry I, II from the master degree in medicine (FMUP), Organic chemistry and Biochemistry I, II, III, for students from the faculty of nutritional sciences (FCNAUP), a PhD program on Metabolism - clinic and experimentation and several other optional units from 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle courses. Research is focused on metabolic syndrome, a public health problem presenting increasing incidence worlwide, which is characterized by a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors. Our research activity targets several aspects within metabolic syndrome such as membrane transport, nutrition and environmental factors, oxidative stress, inflammation and angiogenesis. The department of Biochemistry is also involved in scientific diffusion through the organization of symposiae and other events directed to the public. |
Description: | The department of Biochemistry was created in 2011 and derives from two previous units from our medical school: Biochemistry and Physiological chemistry. We develop teaching, research and service handling activities. We comprise a multidisciplinary team of people, with 10 PhD and 12 nonPhD teachers that provide diverse knowledge and scientific interest development to the students. Most of the senior members supervise research teams that comprise PostDocs, PhD students, and master students with distinct backgrounds. A team of secretary and lab technicians support the research and teaching activity of the department. Several collaborations with national and international institutions, mainly in research activities, are also undertaken. |
