Thematic Seminars

MSP17_1 - ECTS
This Unit aims to acquire knowledge and discuss subjects with relevance to contemporary Public Health. In this unit it is expected that the students get to know some of the major public health issues in the national and international arenas, namely regarding the burden of most communicable and non-communicable diseases in different settings and the policies directed to prevent treat and manage those conditions, at the local, regional national and international levels. Students are also expected to get to know overlapping areas between the practice of public health and a number of complementary areas of knowledge, such as environment, economy, work, or the organization of urban space.

Administration and Health Policy

MSP12_1 - ECTS Understand the main concepts of health policies and health systems, namely regarding its organization, design and potential impact in the populations' health and in the health of its subgroups.

Biostatistics I

MSP12_2 - ECTS The main objective of this training program is that students acquire both theorethical and practical knowledge in basic biostatistics.

Ethics in Epidemiology and Public Health

MSP12_4 - ECTS - To provide students with a solid base of knowledge with regard to ethics and philosophy of science, in particular emphasising the object of public health.

- To analyse the historical background that frames the emergency and the epistemology of ethics and philosophy of science.

Essentials of Epidemiology

MSP12_5 - ECTS

Acquisition of knowledge on concepts and methods of epidemiology. Recognition of characteristics, advantages and limitations of the main types of epidemiological studies and aspects related to its planning. Recognize the main types of measures to quantify health/disease. Understand the main types of error in epidemiology.

Individual Project

MSP17_2 - ECTS

This curricular unit should contribute to develop the sudents' ability to plan original research through the acquisition of skills in the different components of planning (literature review, selection and discussion of methods, strategies of data analysis, ethics).

Health promotion techniques

MSP12_7 - ECTS The students should know the theories that underlie health promotion programs and the fundamental techniques for their implementation. Students should be able to design a health promotion program, identifying all of its components, such as the definition of objectives and targets, actions planning and strategies to perform the program evaluation.

Applied Bioestatistics

MSP12_13 - ECTS The general objective of this optional module is to widen the discussion of concepts and methodologies on statistical analysis, which were taught in the previous modules (Biostatistics I and II), taking into account the students’ research area.

Biostatistics II

MSP12_14 - ECTS

The objective of the course is to provide knowledge and comprehension on multivariable statistical models: (1) conceptual comprehension of the principles and practical applications of these models, (2) to be able to choose the appropriate analytical and model building strategy, discussing the different options for the inclusion of the variables, (3) understand and discuss the concepts of confounding and interaction, (4) to acquire practical knowledge how to realize an analysis and to interpret the results, using a statistical software.

The student will acquire skills to select the appropriate multivariate statistical model for the scientific question under analysis; to know how to build the model and to implement it an statistical software; to critical analyse and interpret the results.

Risk Communication

MSP12_15 - ECTS

Control of Communicable Diseases

MSP12_20 - ECTS
This course aims to address the challenges of infectious diseases in the 21st Century, namely those representing major public health threats, and to present the specificities on impact evaluation of infectious diseases on populations, their surveillance and control.

Demography

MSP12_16 - ECTS

Chronic Diseases

MSP12_19 - ECTS

Health Economics and Management

MSP12_17 - ECTS

Genetic Epidemiology

MSP12_18 - ECTS Acquisition of knowledge on the fundamental concepts and specific methods of genetic epidemiology. We aim that the students: (i) recognize the importance of Genetic Epidemiology in Medicine and in the Biomedical Research and (ii) are able to interpret a Genetic Epidemiology study from the evaluation of the genetic component to the identification of the genetic factors responsible for that disease.

Health Services Management

MSP12_21 - ECTS To know and critically appraise management tools for health care units, regarding their potential impact in a public health perspective.

To acknowlegde and support the role for managerial epidemiology.

Health Measurements: Questionnaries and Scales

MSP12_31 - ECTS

To gain theoretical and practical knowledge in the development and application of instruments for the evaluation of objective and subjective health measures.

Qualitative Methods in Health

MSP12_22 - ECTS

This unit aims to understand the contribution of qualitative methods for epidemiological research, exploring contexts of application and different methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Identifying contexts of application of qualitative methodology in health. To design a qualitative investigation. Identifying sampling techniques and methods of gathering information. Assessing the quality of qualitative research

Nutrition and Public Health

MSP12_23 - ECTS

To increase knowledge and develop skills in dietary methodologies and determinants relevant for Public Health.

To develop students' skills for the planning and development of community interventions in Public Health Nutrition.

Health Care Organizational Quality

MSP12_24 - ECTS

Systematic Reviews and Essentials of Meta-Analysis

MSP12_25 - ECTS

Systematic reviews are becoming more frequent in the scientific literature, which contributes to an increase in the transparency and quality of literature reviews.

We will cover methodological aspects of systematic reviews, namely: identification of potentially eligible studies in different sources and efficient management of the searches; assessment of the quality of the studies; data extraction from the original reports; different strategies for data synthesis. We will also present the scientific basis for quantitative synthesis of the results by meta-analysis.

Environmental and occupational health

MSP12_8 - ECTS Acquire knowledge related to the main environmental problems and their effects on health. Understanding the specificity of research methods in this area, particularly with regard to the quantification of exposures and risk assessment. Understanding the natural, built and psychosocial environment as critical determinants of health.

Health and Society

MSP12_3 - ECTS

To analyse the cultural, social, economic and political dimensions in health and medicine.

International Health

MSP12_26 - ECTS
