Objectives

This unit aims to understand the contribution of qualitative methods for epidemiological research, exploring contexts of application and different methods of data collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Identifying contexts of application of qualitative methodology in health. To design a qualitative investigation. Identifying sampling techniques and methods of gathering information. Assessing the quality of qualitative research

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus is intended to increase knowledge of the qualitative research methods allowing students to identify the application contexts, and data collection and data analysis techniques.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methods to be used will have as main purpose to present the theoretical dimension of the main concepts and contents and also to allow groups of discussion and debate in the theoretical and practical sessions. The theoretical and reflexive training is based on teaching methodologies through the exhibition part of the teaching and carrying out work in the classroom;  and through training of reflexive skills, acquired by contact with the teacher and independent student work. It is planned the oral presentation by students and respective discussion to increase the debate. It is also promoted the student's capacity to elaborate a qualitative research project.

Eligibility for exams

Terms of frequency: Includes the development of a report, being necessary: a) an oral presentation of the project, and b) to deliver a written report. All these elements are mandatory, regardless of student status.

 Attendance of at least 75% of all classes.

 

Calculation formula of final grade

Formula Evaluation: Criteria weighting of each of the evaluation components of the final grade of the course: Oral presentation  (25%), written report (75%).

It is mandatory to carry out all elements of evaluation.
