Cultural Animation

MSOCI027 - ECTS To understand the centrality and conflict of the paradigms around which the proposals of cultural animation in contemporary societies are structured
To relate the emergence of such paradigms with broader historical and societal changes;

To understand the role of culture and symbolic order in the training processes

To understand the relation between cultural animation and the new social movements
Students should achieve the following skills:
Ability to analyze critically sociological theories on the relationship between culture and entertainment
Ability to apply knowledge in pluri-institutional contexts and in informal areas;

Ability to search, select, analyze and produce information

Ability to communicate knowledge, both orally and in writing, and capacity for autonomous learning

Research and Intervention Methodologies

MSOCI008 - ECTS The overall objective of this discipline is the consolidation of the training in quantitative and qualitative methodologies and methodologies of reasoned sociological intervention.

The specific objectives that should be fulfilled are:
- to think about social production of scientific knowledge;
- To enhance scientific preparation about theoretical and methodological assumptions, which are the basis of research;
- To increase the knowledge regarding the design of research programs and strategies of basic and applied investigation;
- To operationalize the strategies of basic and applied research;
- To identify and assess critically the variety of methods and techniques of research

Students should achieve a thorough knowledge of the subject and the methods and techniques of sociological research, through the development of the following skills:
- To decide critically on the paradigms suitable for basic and applied research;
- To design the research and strategies of basic and applied research suitable for the objects of study and for the objectives of research;
- To operationalize the methods and research techniques, taking into account their virtues and limitations;
- To assess/evaluate critically the use of different techniques for collecting and processing information.

Sociology of Health and Illness

MSOCI026 - ECTS This is an introductory course to the main sociological debates on health and illness. The first part of the course addresses the main theories and methodological contributions of Sociology of Health and Illness. The second part of the course deals with the social determinants of health and disease, with a special focus on inequalities in access to health. The third and last part of the course addresses the health care system in Portugal.
By the end of the semester, students are expected to show proficiency in the following: articulation of the main problematics in the field of health and illness; analysis of socio-economic factors influencing health and disease; analysis of health care systems.

Sociology of the Environment

MSOCI022 - ECTS Objectives
- Analysis of contemporary social realities at local, national and global environmental issues in the context of a globalized world;
- Analysis of recent theoretical and empirical developments in the fields of development and sustainability, with particular focus on the problems of local governments, development models and social movements;
- Analysis of social movements and perception of environmental associations in the context of globalization;
- Analysis of the relationship between social and natural systems in the context of the increasing social risks;
- Analysis of political, economic, social, legal and symbolic related with this problems;

Sociology of Aging

MSOCI023 - ECTS Objectives

- Understanding the diversity of approaches and methodologies applied to study the "problem" of aging in contemporary societies.
- Study the main dilemmas and challenges that are posed to society and an aging family members.
- Analyze the processes of social construction of aging and the relationship between public policy and family sphere.

General Objectives:
- to understand theoretical, methodological and ethical assumptions of intervention in the management of people in organizations

- To have a preparation at a scientific and professional level for investigative approaches of intervention in different areas of people management
-To develop skills for intervention in technical areas of people management through the construction and use of different operational tools

- To improve the skills of analysis, evaluation and scientifically supported intervention .

MSOCI012 - ECTS The objectives are to
1. Analyse the main theoretical structural features of the discipline.
2. Make / build concepts based on acquired knowledge, implementing when possible, the capacity for critical analysis, in order to create a dynamic learning starting in the classroom, extending later to social reality through possible field research.
3. Apply the concepts acquired / learnt in the analysis of social phenomena in contemporary society.

Portuguese Society - Social Structure and Restructuring

MSOCI018 - ECTS Knowledge about the genesis and structure of the main processes of social (re)production which structured Portuguese society over the last four decades.
Compared knowledge about the main specificities of the Portuguese social situation.
Identification and understanding of the various logics of social and institutional space in Portuguese territory construction.

Successful students should acquire:

A good understanding of theories on and studies about the structure and restructuring of contemporary Portuguese society.
An understanding of methods to construct sociological knowledge about the contemporary Portuguese society.
An ability to produce informed sociological reflection and analysis on the reality of contemporary Portuguese society.
An ability for oral and written communication of knowledge and of autonomous learning.

Sociology of Art

MSOCI019 - ECTS The teacher’s objective is to encourage the student to:
- Acquire knowledge and specialized skills in the area of sociology of art;
- Understand better the sociological approach to the relationship between art, culture and society in the context of cultural globalisation;
- Acquire a better knowledge of Portuguese society from the point of view of artistic production and reception.

Learning outcomes for the student

- A greater understanding of the theories and problems that refer to specific themes of sociological analysis and othe fields in the social sciences;

Sociology of the Territory

MSOCI025 - ECTS Aims and Skills:
- Knowledge about the course main theoretical and methodoligical issues,emphasinsing the new forms of organization od the space and the territory. Consequently, it will be discussed the operationalization of traditional typologies in the context of contemporary societies and the reconsiderations in need;
- Sensibilization towards the importance of territory interdisciplanary perspective. In that sense it will be given special attention to other scientific fields like geography and anthropology;
- It will be given a particular attention to the hstorical notion of the urban reality in the global imaginary.That dimension implies to analize the urban and so cial change in connection with phenomena of geographical and social mobility what is related to migrations, ethnicity , culture, life stlyle and citizenship;
- Knowledge about the new traits, representations and appropriations of the social rural space;
- Iniciation to oprational skills in order to elaborate research projects related to the professional formation and sociological action in institutions responsible for plannin and management of space and terriorry.

Learning Outcomes:
- Deepening of theories and problematics concerned with specific issues of territory sociological contemporary analysis;
- Development of a critical and reflexive attitude in terms of space and territory;
- Comphreension of the new social and cultural features of contemporary cities.
