Objectives
Knowledge about the genesis and structure of the main processes of social (re)production which structured Portuguese society over the last four decades.
Compared knowledge about the main specificities of the Portuguese social situation.
Identification and understanding of the various logics of social and institutional space in Portuguese territory construction.
Successful students should acquire:
A good understanding of theories on and studies about the structure and restructuring of contemporary Portuguese society.
An understanding of methods to construct sociological knowledge about the contemporary Portuguese society.
An ability to produce informed sociological reflection and analysis on the reality of contemporary Portuguese society.
An ability for oral and written communication of knowledge and of autonomous learning.
Program
1. Portuguese social structure: from dualization to complexity.
2. Demographic transformations, littoralisation, (sub) urbanization and reconfiguration of economic activities.
3. Education and inconsistencies in the educational process.
4. Class structure, social mobility and social dissimilarities
5. Transformations of rural life: investigations and relative modernizations.
6. Industrialization and its alternative forms of formulation: from small and large industrial regions to diffused industrialization.
7. Cities and the (re)production of the economic, social and cultural discontinuity.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretico practical classes (TP) - exposure and analysis of program contents and thematic debate about their relevancy in the Portuguese society.
Tutorial Sessions (OT) - from various subject themes, preparing, writing and discussing a little essay made by each student.

Eligibility for exams
Final exam;
Work developed in tutorial supervision sessions (essay);
Attendance in theoretical-practical classes and tutorial supervision sessions.
Students are required to complete all assessment components, regardless of student status.
Calculation formula of final grade
Weighting of each assessment component towards the final mark for the course unit:
Final exam - 70% of the final mark;
Work developed in tutorial supervision sessions (essay)- 20% of the final mark;
Attendance in theoretical-practical classes and tutorial supervision sessions - 10% of the final mark.
Examinations or Special Assignments
Students who are legally exempt from class attendance are required to contact the lecturer as soon as classes start in order to establish the corresponding assessment procedures.
Classification improvement
According to Article 12 of the Assessment Regulations in force in FLUP, students wishing to improve their mark can do so in the regular and resit exam periods and until the final assessment period (inclusively) of the academic year following the successful completion of the course unit. Students wishing to improve their mark in the year following the year the course units were successfully completed will have to follow the programs and assessment methods prevailing in the previous academic year and are required to take a written final exam.
