Technical English

In the field of Information Science, few would doubt the importance of the English language as a medium for the global communication of information. There is a recognised need for students of this degree course to develop a knowledge of how English can be used as a tool for the retrieval, interpretation and dissemination of information at this level of academic study.
Technical English for Information Science is a course designed to help students develop confidence in using English in their areas of study, as well as motivating them and developing a sense of achievement in the use of this medium for the accomplishment of certain academic goals. It is hoped that it will also enrich students’ study in other subjects within their degree course.
The course will mainly focus on developing receptive fluency and the study skills involved in reading a variety of texts within the area of Information Science. However, students will also have some opportunity to develop their productive skills in speaking and writing about the texts looked at in class.

Theory and Methodology in Information Science

Introduzir os alunos no core ou núcleo central da Licenciatura em Ciência da Informação através de uma compreensão adequada da natureza desta Ciência no quadro mais amplo das Ciências Humanas e Sociais, seus fundamentos epistemológicos e a evolução que está a acontecer na conjuntura em rede da Era da Informação em que já estamos. Daí a importância do questionamento sobre o tipo de relação da C.I. com os Sistemas Informáticos ou Tecnológicos de Informação.
Perceber as diferentes perspectivas existentes sobre Ciência da Informação e seu relacionamento com a tradição bibliológica/biblioteconómica, documentalista e arquivística.
Expor e discutir a proposta de uma C.I. transdisciplinar e interdisciplinar, capaz de se projectar em programas de pesquisa guiados pelo Método Quadripolar e também vocacionada para mútliplas trajectories inter e muliidisciplinares.

Entre as disciplinas que formam o core ou núcleo central da Licenciatura em Ciência da Informação, Comportamento Informacional situa-se entre o desiderato epistemológico da Teroria e Metodologia da Ciência da Informação e a vertente aplicada ou teórico-prática do curso.
Visa, pois, uma melhor assimilção das bases epistemológicas e teórico-metodológicas ensinadas no 1º semestre e a aplicação das mesmas através do processo que conduziu os estudos de utilizador e os ensaios de bibliometria feitos surgidos entre Guerras e meados do séc XX até à abordagem mais holísitica e científica que se pretende com o estudo do information behaviour (comportamento informacional).
