2nd cycles of study (Masters) last two school years. In the first year, students shall attend different curricular units, while in the second year they shall complete their dissertation/internship.
Appointment of Dissertation Director and Choice of Dissertation Topic:
Upon registration renewal, students enrolled in a 2nd cycle of studies shall present a
form (Masters degree | Master's Degree Guidance - Individual student file) or (
Masters in Teaching | Master's in Teaching - Individual student file) signed by the dissertation director, indicating both the dissertation topic and the name of the dissertation director.

Admission to Masters viva voce (public oral examination)- 2023/24
Deadline for submitting your Dissertation and for requesting an examination date:
- Regular exam period - up to 31 May;
- Supplementary period- up to July 31;
- Special period for conclusion of Cycles of Studies - enrolment from 1 to 29 July upon payment of ¤12 fee as per U.Porto’s Table of Fees. - Deadline for submission between 02 and 15 September.
2nd cycle - MEBI (Master's in Teaching English in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education)Deadline for requesting and submitting the Dissertation/Project (2nd cycle with 90 Ects):
- Normal Season - until 29 February 2024;
- Special Season - registration takes place from 25 to 29 March 2024 with a fee of 12 euros, according to the U.P. fees table - Deadline for submission of the final work - from 21 to 30 April 2024.
Rules for submitting the application for admission to exams:
- The student must have completed all the units that make up the study cycle plan, with the exception of the Dissertation/Internship Report/Project Work/Initiation into Professional Practice course unit;
- Tuition fees situation regularised;
- The final version of the work, the application for admission to the master's exams signed by the supervisor, the curriculum vitae, the declaration for publication and the document Juri_Classificação de "Projetos/Dissertações em "percurso académico - opção "Projetos/Dissertações/Teses" must be submitted to the information system. No changes are allowed after uploading.

Rules to request a dissertation viva:
- Request for admission for viva voce examination signed by the dissertation director;
- Upload on Sigarra of a digital version of the dissertation, as well as of the student’s curriculum vitae;
- The student must have completed all curricular units within the course’s study plan, except Dissertation/Internship Report/Project/Introduction to Professional Practice;
- Payment of tuition fees up to date;
- Alongside the request for the viva examination, the student shall also upload the final version of their work on Sigarra, with no changes allowed after submission;
- Procedures to publish the Dissertation/Internship Report/Project/Introduction to Professional Practice.
Dissertation formatting rules:
- 50 to 100 pages, Calibri font, size 12, 1.5 spacing between lines (excluding appendixes) as per the Deliberation of the Scientific Council of 15 November, 2017.
- Mandatory use of FLUP’s template standard format (including cover)..
- Mandatory use of the Orthographic Agreement of 1990.
Doctoral Dissertation
Students enrolled in Year 2 shall present:
- A form (Doctoral degree | Doctoral supervision and thesis registration - Individual student file) signed by the dissertation director indicating both the field of study and the name of the dissertation director.

Admission to Doctoral viva voce (public oral examination)- 2023/24
Deadline for submission of Dissertation and for requesting an examination date:
- Regular Season - up to 31 May;
- Supplementary season - up to June 30;
- Special period for conclusion of Cycles of Studies - Dissertation submission between 1 and 30 September.
Dissertation formatting rules:
- 200 to 400 pages, Calibri font, size 12, 1.5 spacing between lines (excluding appendixes) as per the Deliberation of the Scientific Council of 15 November, 2017.
- Mandatory use of FLUP’s template’s standard format (including cover).
- Mandatory use of the Orthographic Agreement of 1990.
Rules to submit a Doctoral Dissertation:
- Upload of the dissertation - academic background - option “Projects/Dissertations/Thesis”.
- Request for admission to doctoral viva voce exam signed by the dissertation director;
- Payment of a ¤500 request fee;
Public viva exam
The student will be notified of the constitution of a jury and of the viva exam date.
They may also check the situation status on Sigarra (upon authentication, click on name, and then on “thesis”);
Information regarding date and venue of the public viva exam will be published on Sigarra.
Procedures after viva exam:
- Delivery of a paper and computerised version of the thesis to the National Library of Portugal.
