Objectives

For the development of the dissertation, the Master Student must start defining in agreement with his supervisor which will be the subject of his dissertation within the scientific area of the studies and following the regulations and strategic conditions of the Course. It should be noted that, in this process, the advisor is a guide, whether the subject is offered by the Advisor or is suggested by the Student.

About the research work, one expected that the Student' work could cover relevant topics of the recent international debates and also could match the scientific opportunity of the theme. Thus, the Student is expected to make the necessary effort to approach his object of study, as original as possible.

Learning outcomes and competences

- To acquire knowledge in the specific area of Urbanism and Urban Design, with the use of research, innovation or deepening professional skills;
- The ability to integrate knowledge, deal with complex issues, develop solutions or make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the ethical and social implications and responsibilities that result from these solutions and these judgments;
- To be able to communicate their conclusions, the knowledge and the reasoning behind them, in a clear and unambiguous way.

Program

Development of a Dissertation, throughout the academic year, duly supervised by the Supervisor, following the academic rules for the development of dissertations, specifically its regulations, the structure of the Dissertation homologated by the Director of the Programme, and other logistic and administrative procedures.

Comments from the literature

The required bibliography will depend on each subject chosen by the Master Studente and on the indications of the respective Supervisor.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The development of the dissertation is guided by a U.Porto Professor or Researcher, or by a Doctorate or a Merit Specialist recognized by the Scientific Committee of FEUP.

The Supervisor and Co-Supervisor, when this exists, will be appointed by the Course Director, after consulting the Scientific Committee.

Eligibility for exams

At the end of the second semester, the student will submit a report with the provisional version of the dissertation, for discussion before a Jury.

Calculation formula of final grade

The report with the provisional version of the dissertation is discussed in a public session with the presence of a Jury chaired by the Director of the Programme, or someone delegated by him, by the Supervisor, and by a Professor or PhD Researcher in the area in which the dissertation is inserted. The final classification is calculated by the arithmetic average of the Jury members' classifications.
