IFIMUP is a member of the Associated Laboratory Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (IN) and a Partner Unit of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP). IFIMUP has a long tradition and is internationally recognized for its fundamental research on the physics of advanced materials with significant scientific and technological impact, through the detailed, accurate and systematic characterization of a wide range of physical properties over extended ranges of temperature, magnetic and electric fields. The research activities cover the Physics of Magnetic Materials, Magnetoelectric Dielectrics and related Materials, as well as Colossal magnetoresistance oxides. In the last decade nanotechnologies have been introduced and extended research has been done in the areas, template based nanofabrication of nanowires and nanotubes, nanogranular and nanostructured magnetic films, namely multilayers, spin valves and magnetic tunnel junctions. In parallel, fundamental research is being performed in layered/nanostratified materials having giant magnetocaloric and magnetostrictive effects. IFIMUP's laboratories total an area of 1130 m2 to include materials fabrication (e.g. ion beam deposition, nanoporous templates, electrodeposition), ultrashort pulse laser and structural (X-ray diffraction, Raman and Mossbauer spectroscopies), magnetic (SQUID, VSM, MOKE, pump-probe and ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopies), and electrical (resistivity, magnetoresistance, complex electric susceptibility) characterization facilities. |
