Abstract (EN): A current study of the Portuguese situation has been looking at several types of SMEs and their use of the Internet to support business processes. This study also tries to evaluate the interest and anticipated benefits of advanced ISDN and ATM communication technologies for that purpose. A survey of 120 SMEs in the Northern region of Portugal indicated rising interest in using such technologies. Based on this sample, this paper characterises the current situation as regards technology, services, expectations and fears of the Internet. A draft model, named MINET, is proposed for supporting SMEs in the process of starting to use advanced communication technologies, understanding the Internet and gaining effective competitive advantages.
