Objectives

- to develop skills - cognitive skills and behaviors - in the area of physician-patient communication, including qualification for clinical history procedures and physical examination, including vital signs, head and neck, chest and upper and lower limbs, and neurological examination.

In the course of the curricular unit the student will initiate his contact with the clinical reality, predominantly in the context of the hospital wards, punctually in the context of the external consultation.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this curricular unit the student must have acquired the capacity to collect a clinical history that deals with the patients with pathologies of the respiratory, cardiovascular and nervous systems. Methods will be taught to compose the data, to order them in a meaningful narrative that makes possible the correct interpretation by others, the proper use of medical semantics and their correspondence with the general vocabulary. Techniques will be demonstrated to detect inconsistencies and failures in the information provided by the patient.

The physical examination methodology, the interpretation of vital signs, palpation techniques, percussion and chest auscultation will be taught while the learning will be evaluated during practical classes in medical wards. A summary neurological examination will also be performed.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

Prerequisites comprise much of the knowledge previously acquired in the disciplines of morphology, biochemistry and statistics to correctly proceed to the orderly and fruitful search for symptoms and signs. Competency in interacting with colleagues, other health professionals, patients, and family members has been acquired throughout the life of the student and developed in the disciplines that directly address these abilities.

The co-requisites to be acquired during this year of MMED consist of knowledge derived from other disciplines, particularly biopathology, microbiology, immunology, genetics and pharmacology.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching is divided into several components.

- Theoretical classes, twenty-two, one hour long, each (1 class).

- Seminars, six, with two hours each (5 classes).

- Practical classes, thirteen, with a duration of ninety minutes, each (an estimate of 40 classes).

- The fourth component includes the use of training templates to identify acute frames with the appropriate initial corrections and the model of recorded cardiac and respiratory sounds for learning cardiac and respiratory auscultation (sessions to be integrated at the time of the practical classes).

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Designation Weight (%)
Teste 100,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

Designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 65,00
Frequência das aulas 57,00
Trabalho escrito 40,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

The frequency of the curricular unit derives from the participation in at least 75% of the practical sessions, the writing of three clinical histories being necessary.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final theoretical exam - 100% of the final grade;minimum required grade of 9.5 in any case.

As a necessary condition to have access to the final exam, it is necessary to obtain at least 9.5 values in the evaluation developed in practical classes. In this context, it is necessary to present a "gestures book" fully completed and validated by the teacher.

Depending on the availability of means, a practical examination may take place according to the “Objective structured clinical examination” model, which will have a weighting in the final grade of 15%, in which case the theoretical exam will pass to 85% of the total.
