Introduction to Quality. The importance of quality in management. Quality Models and Systems. Continuous Quality Improvement. Measuring Quality and introducing indicator systems. Quality Auditing. Variability in the provision of care and the consequences of non-quality in Medicine. What is patient safety? The importance of human factors to patient safety. Error in Medicine - causes, types and ways to avoid it. Learning from errors. Linking payment to the quality of care. Relations between performance assessment and quality.
Five seminars of 2 hour each, for a total of 10 hours per student. These sessions will be conducted by individuals with large experience in the subjects that are relevant for the course objectives. It is foreseen that the student will have around 27 hours of workload in this course.

Assessment will be made through a written exam, with a small number of open and direct answer questions and an essay question (1 to choose out of 2). Students will be assessed in the end of the term and there will be a further exam for those missing or not getting approval in the preceding tests. For the student to get through this curricular unit it will be necessary to be present in two thirds of the sessions and to have a final average of at least 10 out of 20 in the exam.
The final grade will be the grade at the final exam.
