Objectives

The main aim of Biopathology II – General Pathological Anatomy II is getting the students to use the study of lesions (morphological, immunological, biochemical, etc.) as a tool for understanding the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, therapeutic and prognostic selection of the diseases and/or patients, centered in organs/systems.

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus encompasses topics that will enable students to identify, discuss, explain, relate and question the etiopathogenesis of lesions and diseases, the morphologic basis for diagnosis, therapy selection and prognostic evaluation.

Introduction to the hemolymphopoietic pathology; Hematologic neoplasias: leukemias and lymphomas; Pathology of the upper respiratory airways; Obstructive and restrictive lung diseases; Neoplasias of the lung and pleura; Inflamatory renal pathology; Prostatic hyperplasia and neoplasia; Pathology of the oral cavity; Peptic ulcer and H. pylori; Idiopathic inflammatory disease of the intestine and pathology of the biliary tract; Carcinoma of the stomach; Cancer of the digestive tract; FAP and adenoma-carcinoma sequence; Hereditary carcinomas; Lynch Syndrome; Viral Hepatitis; Alcohol and hepatic cirrhosis; Primitive and secondary hepatic neoplasias; Pancreatitis and carcinoma of the pancreas; Thyroid pathology; Aspirative biopsy and “core biopsy”; Cancer of the cervix and virus-induced-cancer; Endometrial Hyperplasia and neoplasia; Neoplasic pathology of the testicle, ovary and placenta; Breast pathology; Premalignant and malignant lesions of the skin; Vascular and infectious pathology of SNC; Desmyelinating and degenerative diseases of SNC; Geriatric pathology. Molecular medicine and prevention.

Teaching methods and learning activities

162 hours/student, corresponding to 74,5h of presential teaching: 1h/week - lectures; 2,5h/week – seminars; 2h/week - practical sessions and 4h autopsy or anatomo-clinical sessions. The practical session is dedicated to the observation of macroscopic, histological and ultrastructural specimens. The seminar is available in advance to the students at the e-Learning page of the Curricular Unit with support material. e-learning course: basic information on the objectives of the Curricular Unit, program, calendar, assessment procedures, model examination and additional material to introduce or discuss contents that are not explicit on the text books, glossary, introductory texts for the practical sessions, quizzes for auto-assessment, material for preparing the seminars.

Assessment composed of Practical part (4 marks), Theoretical part (13 marks), assessment for Seminars and Practical Sessions (2 marks) and answers to bi-weekly quizzes (1 mark).material with documents and questions for preparing the weekly Seminars and links for other relevant sites with pathology material.

Eligibility for exams

According to the norms from the Pedagogical Council. Students with special regimes (e.g. student workers) will also follow the norms from the Pedagogical Council.

Calculation formula of final grade

Assessment composed of Practical part (4 marks), Theoretical part (13 marks), assessment of each practical group for Seminars and Practical Sessions (2 marks) and individual answers to fortnightly quizzes (1 mark). The marks attributed to Seminar and Practical Sessions

Fortnightly quizzes at the e-learning platform. Preparation of weekly Seminars.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Norms from the Pedagogical Council will be applied.

Classification improvement

Students with over 16 as their final classification have to perform an oral exam to maintain the final mark. There will be no other situation for improving the final mark.
