Resumo (PT): Num primeiro tópico, aborda-se em traços gerais a evolução que a área da documentação/informação sofreu desde finais do século XIX até que se consagrou o termo ‘Ciência da Informação’ (CI), correspondendo a um campo de saber com um objecto de estudo específico. Foca-se depois o impacto que as tecnologias tiveram nos serviços de informação desde meados do último século, tornando-se indissociáveis do tratamento e uso da informação. Neste enquadramento, procura-se justificar como indispensável a componente tecnológica nos modelos formativos em CI e ilustra-se essa indispensabilidade com o caso da formação existente na Universidade do Porto, em que os cursos nesta área são partilhados entre duas faculdades, conjugando uma vertente humanística e de Ciências Sociais, na Faculdade de Letras, com uma componente tecnológica, na Faculdade de Engenharia.

Abstract (EN): In a first topic, this article gives a general overview about the evolution that documentation/information area followed since the end of the 19th century until the moment when the term ‘Information Science’ (IS) was established, referring to a knowledge field with a specific object of study. Afterwards it is described the impact that technology caused in information services since the middle of the last century, becoming inseparable from the treatment and use of information. In this framework it is justified the technological component in IS educative models and that is illustrated with the case of existing education in University of Porto, where the programs in IS are shared by two faculties, congregating a humanistic and social scientific view in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with a technological component in the Faculty of Engineering.
