Pathology and Molecular Genetics

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).

The Doctoral Programme in Pathology and Molecular Genetics is the response to the perceived need for advanced training in the area of molecular pathology and results from the evolution of previous master's degrees, namely Molecular Medicine, Molecular Oncology, and Oncology.

The programme is aimed at young graduates with integrated master's degrees in the area of health sciences interested in doing basic and translational research in the area of biology and in improving and acquiring new skills in molecular diagnosis applied to biopathology and life sciences problems.

The course will be organised in sequential modules and will be held in parallel to the Doctoral Programme in Molecular Medicine and Oncology. In the first semester, there will be modules common to both courses, which will therefore be attended by students of both.

The programme is organised by the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS) and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), in conjunction with two associated laboratories, the Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology of the University of Porto (IPATIMUP) and the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology/Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBMC/INEB), and in collaboration with other higher education institutions, hospital institutions (University Centre of Santo António, University Hospital Centre São João and Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Porto) and other public or private institutions dedicated to research and postgraduate studies in health sciences.

Advanced scientific and professional training in the field of molecular pathology. Enables its students to lead and integrate scientific research projects and teams. It also provides skills for molecular diagnosis in oncology, communicable diseases, and other areas of the health sciences.

Graduates in Health Technologies, Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Microbiology, or holders of integrated master's degrees in the areas of health sciences according to the rules of the Bologna Process are admitted to apply for the programme.

Among other requirements, it is considered an absolute condition for submission and public defence of the thesis the inclusion in it of a minimum of 1 original article (full length paper) in which the doctoral student is the 1st author, accepted or already published in an international journal of the speciality.
