Courses Units

Cell Cycle and Apoptosis II

PDMOM13_3 - ECTS

To review fundamental knowledge on cell cycle (CC) and apoptotic cell death (ACD), as contributors to homeostasis.

To integrate knowledge on CC and ACD disregulation as central to the pathogenesis of malignancies and other disorders. Illustrating examples.

To familiarize, theoretically, with technical procedures used in the study of theses entities.

To set forth scientific problems and methodological strategies to solve them.

To be aware of the current frontiers of knowledge and the potential to go ahead of them. Special attention to the therapeutical implications of this knowledge.

Molecular Cytogenetics II

PDMOM13_6 - ECTS To acquire knowledge about the various cytogenetic techniques; To know the advantages and limitations of these methodologies in various models of carcinogenesis; To understand the relevance of the genetic information for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and follow up of neoplastic diseases; To know the somatic mutation theory of cancer, with emphasis for the relevance of fusion genes for carcinogenesis; Practical classes on FISH analysis.

Chronobiology

PD_ME010 - ECTS To understand how circadian rythms affect daily life and biology, from the genome to the complex behaviour of the individual; To appreciate and value the role of Chronobiology on either physiologic and pathologic conditions; to understand the relationship between circadian rhythms and therapy

Animal cell culture

PD_MCE016 - ECTS

Training

PD_Biom03 - ECTS During the course , the student should develop and acquire skills in the area of the training. The training could be  laboratory based (in one laboratory or by rotation in more than one laboratory) or clinic, with specific learning objectives for each of the options.

Pharmacogenomics and Molecular Epidemiology II

PDMOM13_8 - ECTS The objective of the course is to gain knowledge of the principal updated knowledge on Pharmacogenomics and Personalized Medicne. A particular focus will be given to the new biomarkers that may be in association to mechanisms of disease and to tailored therapeutic approaches. A focus will be given  Ecogenetics and Molecular Epidemiology indicating its importance to Pharmacogenomics. It is aimed to improve the student s evaluation skills to discuss the introduction of new Biomarkers as Predictive factores of the response to treament or as prognostic factors. The purpose of the course is also to prepare students to become leaders in this scientific field.

Fundaments and Methods of Molecular Biology

PDN13_3 - ECTS

The unit provides theoretical-practical knowledge on the molecular organization and functioning of the cell and the methodologies available to study cell components of the neurons and glia. The student will have a hands on learning process of the different experimental approaches, their fundaments, applications, practical requirements, advantages and limitations. Students are expected to plan the best approach to solve a particular scientific question. These competencies will help the student with the design and execution of the master thesis’s research project, will allow him to understand the work performed by others and to gain critical assessment of scientific data.

Genetics and Human Disease II

PDMOM13_7 - ECTS To provide the students the fundamental outlines concerning the inheritance of the characteristics that define the human being in their normal and pathological manifestations, using disease models for discussion.

Metabolism and metabolic diseases

PD_MCE021 - ECTS

Oncobiology II

PDMOM13_4 - ECTS

The general aim of the Oncobiology module is integrated in the principal goal of the “Mestrado em Medicina e Oncologia Molecular da FMUP”, directed to the acquisition of the language and the basic concepts of molecular biology and molecular pathology in order to contribute to further understanding of cellular, tissue and organic functioning, with importance for the medical diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutics.

The specific aim of this Module is threefold:

 - To understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying cancer development;

- To understand the mechanisms of action of the environmental factors that cause cancer and their gene-environmental interactions;

- To understand the role of molecular biomarkers in cancer as tools for prognostic evaluation and targeted therapy.

Thesis Project

PD_Biom04 - ECTS At the end of the course, the student should present the thesis proposal project, after the agreement of the supervisor and co-supervisor for further evaluation of the Scientific Committee of the course.

Stress: biology, environment and health

PD_MCE005 - ECTS

Learning outcomes of the curricular unit:

This curricular unit is intended to assist medical students to increase their awareness of stress and its deleterious effects on health. At the end of this unit students will be able to:

  1. Recognize the impact of stress on modern life and health
  2. Identify the major mediators involved in stress response
  3. Understand the physiological responses to different types of stressors
  4. Identify stress related affective and metabolic chronic diseases
  5. Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the association between stress and both affective and metabolic chronic diseases
  6. Recognize the main human and animal experimental models, and biomarkers, to study stress
7. Recognize various strategies to cope with stress

Biostatistics I

PDICSS13_2 - ECTS This unit aims to empower the students with theoretical foundations and practical approach to basic statistical methods used in clinical research, assessment of technologies and health service research. After this course unit the students should be able to: identify the correct statistical methodology for data analysis; apply these methods using statistical software; interpret the results of the statistical methods

Scientific Communication and Publishing

PDICSS013_5 - ECTS - Explain the fundamentals of scientific communication and publication; - Describe the main formats of communication, scientific publication in health; - Caracterize the scientific paper - Describe the peer-review process; - Explain the contribution of the peer review process as a guarantee of the quality of scientific research; - Write scientific articles, abstracts, oral communications, posters and research protocols; - Describe the main criteria for structuring and writing a master thesis and a PhD thesis; - Present oral communications; - Perform slides and posters.

Challenges in Epidemiologic Research

PDSP12_2 - ECTS To understand and feel the challenges that come up in implementing na epidemiologic study in contemporary societies. To be able to use information systems available, with a critical view on the validity of the data they keep
