Details
Summary: Solar hydrogen generated via photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells is an envisioned sustainable and cost-effective strategy. However, no ideal material was discovered so far for efficient and stable PEC water splitting; the alternative is to use photoelectrodephotovoltaic
tandem PEC devices (for short PEC-PV) for standalone operation.
Addressing the challenges of solar energy capture and storage, HopeH2 project aims at developing a PEC-PV tandem device for efficient, stable and scalable light-driven water splitting. HopeH2 puts forward disruptive approaches for developing a PEC-PV
prototype comprising tandem photoelectrodes with a solar-to-H2 energy conversion efficiency of 3 %, stable for more than 1000 h (250 h in field tests); these objectives go beyond the state-of-the-art and roots in the unique expertise of the hosting lab. A life cycle and economic analyses will be performed to assess sustainability and the costeffectiveness of PEC-PV tandem technology.
