Objectives

To make students aware of the production of sound of languages in general and of Portuguese in particular. To instruct students in the use of basic techniques such as phonetic transcription. To provide students with a profound understanding of articulatory, acoustic and perceptive phonetics in Portuguese. To make students aware of issues related to phonetic variation.

Program

1 – Portuguese Phonetic Transcription.
1.1 – Principles of a phonetic transcription system.
1.2 – The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
1.3 – Symbols and conventions of the IPA used in Portuguese phonetic transcription.
1.4 – Phonetic transcription of the Portuguese dialectal varieties.

2 – Portuguese articulatory phonetics.
2.1 – The phonatory system and speech sound production.
2.2 – Traditional articulatory description and classification of Portuguese sounds.

3 – Portuguese acoustic phonetics.
3.1 – Basic notions on general acoustics and speech acoustics.
3.2 – Basic nations on spectography and acoustic analysis.
3.3 – Acoustic characteristics of Portuguese vowels and consonants.

4 – Portuguese perceptive phonetics.
4.1 – Perceptive phonetics and speech perception.
4.2 – Phases and levels of speech perception processes.
4.3 – Speech perception and categorization.
4.4 – Most relevant acoustic features in categorical speech perception.

5 – Dialect variation in Portuguese.
5.1 – Norm and variation.
5.2 – European and Non-European varieties of Contemporary Portuguese.

Eligibility for exams

The students who achieve a grade of 10 marks or higher in the final exam (students registered in final evaluation) or an average grade in the continuous evaluation assessment (students registered in continuous evaluation)

Class attendance.
In accordance with the FLUP’s regulations in force
- final evaluation: class attendance not required;
- continuous evaluation: compulsory attendance of a minimum of 3/4 of classes (practical classes).

Calculation formula of final grade

- final evaluation: grades represent 100% of the final exam grade (in a scale of 0 to 20 marks), in accordance with the FLUP’s regulations in force.
- continuous evaluation: final mark (scale of 0 to 20 marks) is based on: 1) written test = 20%; 2) theoretical component of the final exam = 35%; 3) phonetic transcription and analysis of a dialectal sample = 12,5%; 4) collecting and correcting linguistic errors = 5%; 5) 3 practical tests = 7,5%; 6) class participation = 5%; 7) report on a work or monograph = 15%
