Description: | The Department of Portuguese and Romance Studies (DEPER) was established by means of the Statutes of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (FLUP) published in Diário da República, Series II, No. 103, of 4th May 2000. The Department covers the major areas of linguistic, literary and cultural studies in Romance languages and, consequently, the great moments that shaped Romance tradition: Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages and subsequent periods, including their complex relationships, formulations and usages throughout the centuries. Essentially, the area of DEPER includes the long literary tradition of Portuguese linguistic identity, concerning its permanence and individuality of nearly a millennium, spread throughout the globe in rich variety, its cultural and ‘poetic’ contact with different peoples, the configuration of literary works of art of manifold artistic creations and expressions of thought in a language that was formed in the westernmost part of Romania. |
