Personal Presentation

FRANCISCO TOPA (b. Porto, 1966) is Associate Professor with “Agregação” at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto and an integrated member of CITCEM. He teaches in the areas of Brazilian Literature and Culture, Textual Criticism, African Literatures and Folk Literatures. Since 2019, he has been responsible for the Agostinho Neto Chair at FLUP and, since 2023, he is head of the Department of Portuguese and Romance Studies. He was a visiting professor at several Brazilian and European universities.

His research has been directed towards Brazilian and Portuguese literature, African literature, and folk and marginal literature. He published more than 280 works, 30 of which are books. The most recent ones, to be released in 2026, are “Amada Lira, se o teu doce acento”: sonetos e outros poemas de José Basílio da Gama (with Vania Pinheiro Chaves and Ana Paula Tavares), and A independência de Angola em jornais portugueses.
