Objectives

This course aims to a general survey of French literature of XX-XXI centuries by

1. the analysis of some key authors ( or extracts, or integral works) .
2. The study of different socio-cultural contexts and their articulation with changes in aesthetics.T
3. The comparison of literary trends in France with the French-speaking "hors Héxagone", and/or with other cultural and literary contexts

Learning outcomes and competences

- Knowledge of the major changes in French literature during the 20th and early 20th centuries;


  -Ability to analyse literary texts (from the extract to the complete work), taking into account both their expressive potential and their relationship with the historical context (both social and artistic)

- Development of reading and writing skills in French and Portuguese, through some translation exercises of literary texts.

1. Between tradition and modernity : Guillaume Apollinaire and Blaise Cendrars

2. Paths of Surrealism: Paul Éluard and Henri Michaux,

3. The literary phenomenon of Albert Camus's L'Etranger and its post-colonial aftershock.

4. Human existence on stage: Jean-Paul Sartre and Samuel Beckett.

5. History and literature: Marguerite Yourcenar and Marguerite Duras.

6. Between the two shores of the Mediterranean: Tahar Ben Jelloun and Leila Slimani.

Eligibility for exams

Attending 75% of classes, unless established otherwise by law.

Calculation formula of final grade

Assessment components: Attendance, participation, home working, oral presenation: 50% ;
Test: 50%.

Nota bene: For a sucessful evaluation in the course unit, the student can not have a rating lower tahan 9/20 in the written test and the average of the two components should be positive.

Classification improvement
