Students are intended to both deepen the lexicons and master essential grammatical, morphological and syntactical structures of Latin which will, where possible, be related to that Portuguese. Students are also intended to apply this knowledge to the translation into Portuguese of simple (original or adapted) texts and into Latin of short sentences.
At the end of the semester, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of grammatical and lexical structures studied by translating simple texts (Latin / Portuguese, Portuguese / Latin).

1. Preliminary considerations:
- Latin in the context of Indo-European languages.
- Latin and the Romance languages.
- Latin and Portuguese.
- Brief history of the genesis of the Latin alphabet.
- The restored pronounciation of Latin.
- The cases and their functions.
- Notion of stem, theme, ending and characteristic.
2. Reading, translation and grammar commentaryfrom a selection of adapted and annotated texts, organized according to the grammatical subjects presented.
3. Grammar issues
3.1. Morphology
3.1.1. Noun inflexion: nouns (first, second and third declensions), adjectives and pronouns (quis, qui, is, ille, hoc).
3.1.2. Verbal inflexion: indicative mode: present (active and passive voices); imperative mode (present, active); noun forms: present infinitive.
3. 2. Syntax
3.2.1. Subordinate clauses.
3.2.2. Coordinate clauses.
3.2.3. The subordinate clause: relative; circumstantial: temporal, causal, comparatives.
3.3. Main adverbials and agent in the passive.
4. Application of grammar issues to translation exercises into Latin.
5. From Latin to Portuguese: the basics of Portuguese.

3.1.2. Verbal inflection: the Infectum: the Present and Imperfect Preterite (active and passive voice); the Perfectum: only the Perfect Preterite of the indicative (active and passive voice); non-finite forms: present infinitive and past participle.
