Objectives


. To encourage the introduction to sociology, its discourse, language and perspectives.
. To facilitate the familiarisation with the sociology current field of knowledge, by emphasising the Portuguese reality.
. To unleash two central current issues of sociological approach: social inequalities and social change.

Learning outcomes and competences

. Understanding of sociology’s genesis and historical evolution of structural issues.
. Developing the capacity for reflection and critical analysis of contemporary societies triggering the conceptual frameworks of sociology.
. Knowledge and interpretation of processes of social change and globalization that structure contemporary societies.
. Heuristic understanding of the sociology conceptual foundations and exercise a culture of critical citizenship and professional attitudes based on ethical principles.

Teaching methods and learning activities

At this Curricular Unity (CU) are admitted a combination of various types of teaching methodologies. The classes have a Theoretical-Practical (TP) component supported by a specific bibliography, pedagogical materials (slides, texts, developed briefs, conferences) and a student's support (bibliographic/research support and debate). Tutorial Orientation (TO) sessions are held for theoretical and empirical consideration (texts examination; film screening; debates organization; blogs; theme report writing). The Moodle is assumed as the platform where the teacher provides materials and communicate with students.

Eligibility for exams

The assessment is distributed with a final exam: exam (70%) and thematic report (30%). All tests are mandatory, regardless of the student's status.

For the student to be considered approved in the subject, the final classification must be equal to or greater than 10 values, bearing in mind that the classification obtained in any of the assessment components must be equal to or greater than 7.5 values.

Students who have completed the thematic report during the semester and within the regulatory dates, having obtained a grade equal to or greater than 7.5, can access the exams appeal period. The thematic report is not repeatable at the time of appeal.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation in this CU is carried out through a written examination (70%),  and written thematic essay (30%).

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

In the special period, the same assessment components apply as in the course: written exam (70%); thematic report (30%).
Students with special status, namely those covered by the status of Association Manager, Student Athlete, Student Firefighter, Military Student, National Team Athlete, High-Performance Sports Practitioner or Student Worker" (Art. 14, point 1) they must contact the teacher to set special deadlines for the assessment component distributed.

Classification improvement

Improving the final classification obtained in CU is made in the periods and according the rules stipulated in the Faculty Evaluation Standards. It's possible to perform the improvement of the final classification only in the exam component.
The final classification is the result of the weighted average of the highest marks obtained by the student in the evaluation components provided in CU.
