She is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto - Department of Sociology and a researcher at the Institute of Sociology of the same Faculty (IS-UP).  Her research activity has centred on the issue of domestic and gender-based violence, but she has also carried out intense research in the areas of family, ageing, elder abuse, women's work and occupational health.
She has carried out teaching-learning activities in various curricular units of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles of studies in Sociology at FLUP, the University of Porto and other universities. She has been involved in a number of activities, both in management bodies and in various scientific and pedagogical committees at FLUP and other UP Faculties.
She was vice-director of FLUP (2014 - January 2019); vice-president of the Council of Representatives (2010-2014); Director of the Department of Sociology (2004 and 2008), Director of the degree course in Sociology (2004 and 2008); member of the Coordinating Committee of the Scientific Council (2004-2008); member of the Pedagogical Council of FLUP (2006 and 2008). She is currently a member of the General Council of the University of Porto, Chair of FLUP's Ethics Committee and Director of the Master's programme in Sociology.
She has carried out relevant scientific evaluation activities, namely as Coordinator of the Sociology panel: Call for PhD Scholarships 2020, 2021 and 2022; Co-Coordinator of the Monitoring Committee for Research Infrastructures of the National Roadmap, Social Sciences and Humanities (RNIE) (2019-2021); Evaluator of the Evaluation Committee for the Final Scientific Reports of IC&DT projects / Sociology area (2019-2023), member of External Evaluation Committees (CAE) of A3ES, among others. She is also an evaluator for the La Caixa Foundation - Social Observatory.
She is a member of the research team of the RESET project - "Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together", funded by the European Commission's H2020 Programme, Science with and for Society (SWAFS) call (2021-2024).

Her previous research projects include the following:
- "Cleaning in times of pandemic: between precariousness and health risks for cleaning service workers", funded by FCT in the GENDER RESEARCH 4 COVID-19 call (2020-21).
-“HARMED - Socio-economic and health determinants of elder abuse”, financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), sob os programas Portugal 2020 e Compete (2014-2020).
-Social Protection Innovative Investment in Long Term Care; Funding Organisation: H2020-EURO-SOCIETY-2014; Reference: 649565–SPRINT-ESR. (2015-2018).
- DOVE: Domestic Violence against women/men in Europe: Prevalence, determinants, effects and policies/practices (2009-2012).
- Digital inclusion and participation. Comparing the trajectories of digital media use by majority and disadvantaged groups in Portugal and the USA (UTAAustin/CD/0016/2008).
She is the author of several national and international publications in her fields of research.
