The Department of Sociology offers an undergraduate course in Sociology. It was created in 1985 and its curricular structure provides basic, sound and updated scientific preparation in Sociology. The teaching-learning process promoted during the course allows for close contact with certain scientific areas within the social sciences and encourages the development of sociological views on contemporary societies, especially the Portuguese.

Since 1995, the Department offers postgraduate training in sociology (Masters). The Masters courses are aimed at broadening sociological knowledge on Portuguese society and, at the same time, analysing theoretically, methodologically and technically issues that are today being debated within sociology. By encouraging research and training activities, the courses aim to provide a response to the social requests the University is faced with.

The Department of Sociology publishes the journal Sociologia - Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto. The Department also maintains close ties with a research unit, Instituto de Sociologia da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto.

European Bologna Process

Taking into account the new organizational model for higher education with regard to the study cycles resulting from the Bologna Process, the Undergraduate course in Sociology of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, as of 2007-2008, has a length of 6 semesters, corresponding to 180 ECTS. The 1st cycle course awards the first degree.

O 2nd cycle of studies in Sociology has a duration of four semesters, corresponding to 120 ECTS. The course title is Masters in Sociology and, in the 3rd and 4th semesters, students can opt between writing a dissertation or completing a training period and submitting the corresponding report.

The transition from the previous organization of studies to the new structure resulting from the process of adjusting the cycles of study to the Bologna Program will be assured.
