1. To acquire an introductory and basical preparation in Contemporary Philosophy (concerning the period indicated in the program), studying representative figures, doctrine currents and specific problems.
2. To analyse representative source texts referred to fundamental philosophers and schools of philosophy of the considered period.
3. To acquire tools permitting the articulation of the knowledge on nineteenth century philosophy with that of other periods in the history of philosophy.
4. To show the importance of nineteenthth century contemporary philosophy problems, concepts and arguments, as well as of its texts, urging reflection on them.
At the end of the course the students should be able:
1. To show to have acquired an introductory and basical preparation in Modern and Contemporary Philosophy, concerning the nineteenth Century.
2. To know how to analyse nineteenth century philosophical texts, understanding their specificities.
3. To know how to articulate the acquired knowledge with the knowledge concerning other periods of History of Philosophy. 4. To properly use research tools required for the study of nineteenth century philosophy.
5. To proficiently dissert on the main elements of nineteenth century philosophy, on its main figures and doctrinal currents.
6. To analyse fundamental notions, problems and arguments concerning nineteenth century philosophy, on the basis of primary sources.
1. The issue of philosophical modernity and contemporaneity. 2. Fichte, Schelling and the German idealist tradition.
3. Hegel and hegelianism.
4. Schopenhauer.
5. Emersonian transcendentalism and Kierkegaardian fideism.
6. Stirner's individualism.
7. Empiricism, positivism and utilitarianism.
8. Dialectical materialism.
9. Vitalism.
10. Nietzsche.
Mixed seminary and lecture-based course, including tutorials. Discussions with students.
