Acronym: DF
Person in Charge: José Francisco Meirinhos
Description:

Departament: Tower B, 1st floor 1, room 180.

The Department of Philosophy (DoPh) is an organic subunit of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto which is responsible for teaching 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle courses (conferring the degree of licenciate/bachelor, master and doctor, respectively) in the area of Philosophy, delimited by its history and by specific problems, objectives, methodologies and research methods.

In individual and team projects, DoPh's lecturers carry out fundamental and applied research in the various philosophical disciplines — anthropology, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics, philosophy of science, philosophy of education, philosophy of language, philosophy in Portugal, social and political philosophy, the history of philosophy (ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary), logic, metaphysics or ontology — and are responsible for the dissemination and valorization of the results of that research, either within continuing education courses (non-degree granting), or within other university extension activities.

The Department of Philosophy is currently responsible for five study cycles:

Degree in Philosophy U.Porto: comprehensive training for socially relevant professions

The Department of Philosophy is also responsible for continuing education courses (including teacher training) and/or free training.  Coordination: Prof. Maria João Couto
(For updated calendars see Educação Contínua/Áreas de Educação Contínua).

The Department of Philosophy has ERASMUS student and teacher mobility programs (In and Out) with more than 30 European universities, in which students of any cycle can do periods of study, in countries like Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, among others. The University also has mobility agreements (In and Out) with several universities in Portuguese-speaking countries (namely Brasil, Mozambique).
Coordination of the Erasmus program in Philosophy: Prof. José Francisco Meirinhos. International mobility is managed at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto by the International Relations Office.

Brief history of the Department of Philosophy
The PhD resulted from the renaming, in 2000, of the "Philosophy Section" of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and thus prolongs the history of the teaching of Philosophy at the University of Porto. The teaching of Philosophy was instituted at the University of Oporto with the creation of the Faculty of Arts itself on 27 August 1919, functioning until its closure in July 1931 as a consequence of the decree of extinction of 12 April 1928. With the restoration of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, by decree of August 17th 1961, the Degree in Philosophy was restarted the following year. In 1985 the first Masters degree (in Medieval Philosophy) began, and the following year another Masters degree (in Social and Political Philosophy) was created. At the beginning of the 21st century the Integrated Post-Graduate Program in Philosophy began, encompassing both Master's and Doctoral studies. In the 2007/2008 academic year, the study cycles were adapted to the Bologna Process (3-year BA, 2-year MA, 3-year PhD). Continuing the previous work in the integrated training of Philosophy teachers in Secondary Education since 1987/1988, in 2008/2009 the MA in the Teaching of Philosophy in Secondary Education began. The Master in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics) starts in 2023-2024.

Research Unit
The PhD works in conjunction with the Institut of Philosophy (IF), a research unit specially dedicated to the promotion and implementation of fundamental scientific research and cultural extension projects, classified with "Excellent" or "Very Good" in the external evaluations carried out by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). IF is, like the PhD, an organic subunit of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto; it has its own direction and regulations, internally organized in offices or thematic lines, each of them with several Research Groups, all coordinated by teachers of the Department.
