|Description:||The Department of Philosophy (DF), until 2000 "Philosophy Section", is an organic unit within the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and is responsible for organizing and teaching 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle courses in the area of Philosophy. The DF is also responsible for several other types of courses at university level. Lectures of the DF develop fundamental and applied scientific research, either through individual or team projects, in the several different subjects of philosophy: logic, metaphysics/ontology, epistemology, philosophy history (ancient, medieval, modern, contemporary), ethics, social and political philosophy, aesthetics, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of education, philosophy in Portugal, etc. The teaching of Philosophy was instituted in the University of Porto with the creation of the Faculty of Arts on 27th August 1919, under the direction of Leonardo Coimbra until its closure in July 1931, following the bill decreeing its extinction on 12th April 1928. The Faculty of Arts was restored by decree on 17th August 1961 and the Philosophy course is once again offered that year. The first Master’s course (in Medieval Philosophy) began in 1985. In the academic year of 2007/2008, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles adapted to Bologna were initiated and, in 2008/2009, the Master’s Course in Philosophy Teaching was offered for the very first time. The Department maintains SOCRATES/ERASMUS agreements for student and teaching staff mobility with several universities, where students can undertake a study period in countries such as Germany, Spain, Finland, France, Italy, Switzerland, among others. Also under the ERASMUS programme, at the level of Postgraduate courses, the Department participates in the Diplôme Européen d'Études Médiévales (Louvain-la-Neuve and Rome) and in the European Masters in Philosophy of Education of the University of Rouen (France).
The publications of the Department of Philosophy include specialized works, journals, co-editions and collection management. Since 1972 the Department publishes the philosophy journal Revista da Faculdade de Letras – Série de Filosofia: the first series includes two volumes (in four issues, from 1972 to 1973); the second series has been continuously published since 1985, with volume 21 published in 2004. The journal welcomes papers from members of the Department as well as a vast number of national and foreign collaborators in all areas of philosophical studies.
The Institute of Philosophy is a research unit dedicated to boosting and supporting projects for fundamental and cultural scientific research, is part of the Department of Philosophy, with its own direction and statutes and is internally organized into Bureaus. Through external evaluations by the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Institute was classified as Excellent.
