Brief history of the Department of Philosophy The PhD resulted from the renaming, in 2000, of the "Philosophy Section" of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and thus prolongs the history of the teaching of Philosophy at the University of Porto. The teaching of Philosophy was instituted at the University of Oporto with the creation of the Faculty of Arts itself on 27 August 1919, functioning until its closure in July 1931 as a consequence of the decree of extinction of 12 April 1928. With the restoration of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, by decree of August 17th 1961, the Degree in Philosophy was restarted the following year. In 1985 the first Masters degree (in Medieval Philosophy) began, and the following year another Masters degree (in Social and Political Philosophy) was created. At the beginning of the 21st century the Integrated Post-Graduate Program in Philosophy began, encompassing both Master's and Doctoral studies. In the 2007/2008 academic year, the study cycles were adapted to the Bologna Process (3-year BA, 2-year MA, 3-year PhD). Continuing the previous work in the integrated training of Philosophy teachers in Secondary Education since 1987/1988, in 2008/2009 the MA in the Teaching of Philosophy in Secondary Education began. The Master in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics) starts in 2023-2024. Research Unit Department Executive Committee:
