Objectives

The students should reflect on the formative-cognitive and affective values of the mother tongue - Portuguese - as a way to access thought, world representation and human relations.
The students should develop grammatical, verbal, pragmatic and socio-cultural skills.
The students should acquire communication techniques as well as oral and written skills in order to use them efficiently in different situations

Learning outcomes and competences

The analysis of the components of the communicative act and of different levels of linguistic structure allows studentss to acquire a greater capacity of producing an adequate discourse.
The study of the mode of oral communication with practical work on forms of communication such as presentation / exhibition and debate facilitates the mastery of the discourse itself. The work with forms of written discourse such as synthesis, summary, comment, and critical review, reinforces the production competence and the mastery of the stages of planning, textualization and revision. The analysis of aspects of textual structuring, such as cohesion and coherence, leads to a better understanding of the texts and awakens sensitivity to aspects of compositional heterogeneity, discourse modality and polyphony (the 'layering of voices' in discourse), also reinforcing the competence of production.
The theoretical and practical study carried out on communication and textual construction involves the acquisition of communication techniques as well as oral and written competence and develops grammatical, verbal,  pragmatic and sociocultural skills.

Teaching methods and learning activities

There will be attempts to favour individual research, critical thinking and problem solving.
In the orientation classes for the realization of written texts, there will be a critical review that may later constitute individual work as part of the distributed evaluation.
