Objectives

The current syllabus, part of a teacher training course, aims at providing students with solid knowledge of Portuguese literature, taking into consideration the syllabi adopted in the 3rd cycle of basic and secondary schooling, in order to fully prepare them in the respective teaching field. Aiming at including essential aspects of Portuguese literature, the syllabus selects a set of topics, problematizing the corresponding theoretical contexts and establishing a historical and cultural setting to enable students to consolidate the knowledge acquired during undergraduate training, at the same time as it allows the development of the ability to identify and contextualize a topic, an author, a work.

Learning outcomes and competences

This curricular unit aims at providing students with skills in the field of Portuguese literature, combining the chronological vision, with the objective of consolidating the knowledge of Portuguese literary tradition, establishing «memory», with the in-depth study of some topics carefully chosen, by stimulating students’ interest in theoretical reflection. Considering that teacher training should aim at combining knowledge in the corresponding scientific field and the problematization of transversal topics - «canon», the notion of «classical» – the syllabus chooses topics, works and authors, the study of which allows considering, favouring a perspective of analysis, other authors and texts (chronologically preceding and succeeding), allowing an integrated and safe vision of Portuguese literature up until the contemporaneity

Comments from the literature

It should be noted that only part of this bibliography requires a full reading. Students will receive a complete detailed bibliography with all reading intructions in the beginning of the seminar.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Conducted as seminars, the classes intend to combine the teaching praxis of content communication to the existence of seminars in which a theoretical topic organizes the discussion, previously prepared based on the reading of the recommended bibliography. Although the excessive number of students attending the seminars makes the strategies of learning/teaching difficult, it is intended to stimulate the individual research of certain topics, in order to fully develop the argumentation skills and preparation strategies of an assignment. On the other hand, the professors try to accompany the study of secondary topics, in addition to the topics under study, which may eventually have caught the attention of students and for which is provided specific bibliography, available in the «Documents» of this Curricular Unit, so that the students are able to prepare new syllabi or adapt already familiar contents to the teaching process, in an innovative way.
