Objectives

The study of didactic literature, in its various forms and genres, will develop the skills of research, analysis and understanding of the classical period in the history of Latin literature. 

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester, students must be able to: - Understand the political-cultural context of the classical period in Latin literature; - Recognise the polymorphism of didactic literature; - Situate the authors in the history of Greek-Latin literature; - Apply poetical-rhetoric knowledge to the analysis and interpretation of texts.

1. Didactic epos and the epic genre. 1.1. From the epic to the epillion. 1.2. Narratio and evidentia. 2. Lucretius, On the Nature of Things. 3. Virgil, Georgics. 4. The precepts of love and friendship. 4.1. Eros and philia in Latin culture. 4.2. Hellenism and Roman values. 5. Cicero, Friendship. 6. Ovid, The Art of Love.
