Objectives

This course intention is to provide the possibility of putting two Romance languages in contrast: Spanish and the Portuguese, through the management of texts belonging to these two languages through the initiation in the technique of the philological commentary (analysis of the socio-historical, literary, cultural, and linguistic context), with Spanish texts of different characteristics.

The course will help students to acquire an explicit knowledge of the problems arising in the different linguistic levels among the languages involved and to appreciate the relevance of the linguistic research for the theory and practice of translation, as well as to understand and become familiar with the use of the most common strategies used to solve them.

On a practical level the intention is to analyze texts and translate them by applying the most appropriate to each context translation strategies and discuss critically translated texts.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the semester, the student will be capable of:

1. Acquire appropriate principles of translation

2. Learn to analyze a text regarding to its translation

3. Know how to properly use the documentation procedures

4. Learn to apply the concept of equivalence in translation

5. Learn about some of the procedures and methods of translation

6. Review and grade translations

As it is a practical subject, students must perform 4 translations during the semester, with a value of 5 points each. In the case of not performing some of the translations to note, the student fail the course.
