Objectives

The expected outcomes of the course are for successful students to be able to:
• Analyze and classify a wide variety of written and spoken texts according to genre, domain and style;
• Produce texts in Portuguese in varies to scientific, technical, journalistic and commercial styles;
• Write reports, article and abstracts;
• Adapt texts or translations to another audience, genre or style;
• Follow the recommendation of the European Norm for Translation Services 15038;
• Understand and implement the instructions given in style guides, guidelines, and other manuals supplied by clients;
• Recognize the possibilities and limitations of revision parameters in the context of the professional situation;
• Evaluate their own work and that of others

This programme will cover the following:
Linguistic Theory
• Simple and complex sentence structure
• Given and New Information
• Theme and Rheme
• Organization of information

Introduction to and analysis of
• Existing manuals on writing techniques;
• Style guides on academic writing, newspaper articles, software documentation, and other types of technical writing;
Practical work in the production of texts in different styles and genres
An introduction to the problems of revising and editing with exercises on:
• General, stylistic, structural and content editing
• Revision procedures
• Revision in the Professional context
• Self revision
• Revison of work by others
