Objectives

Aims, Competences and Learning Outcomes
By the end of the semester, the Lusophone students shall be able to:
• take some distance regarding original texts, so as to produce a translation exactly correspondent to the wishes of the final user;
• analyze the material to translate in order to identify the obstacles to the translation and to find proper solutions;
• have a conscience about of the range of available resources, including human resources and to know how to use them wisely;
• be capable of exercising one’s own critical mind in order to evaluate one’s own and others’ translations;
• be capable of exercising a critical mind in order to evaluate the available resources on the Web (dictionaries, terminology databases, text-mirrors, etc.);
• to be capable of reflecting about their learning process and about their future professional path.

Program

1. Expositions followed by a discussion on:
• the translator’s profile;
• the translator’s partners;
• the translator’s work;
• the notion of quality in translation;
• obstacles to translation: opacity, ambiguity, presumed or proved default;
• the risks in translation: false friends, collocations, idiomatic expressions, cultural specificities.

2. Progressive training

• MSDS translation;
• Synoptic translation;
• Document translation;
• Complete translation.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical and practical lessons: expositive and interactive methods;
Tutoring and practical lessons: active method.
