Dr. Miguel Saraiva is 33 year old Civil Engineer, with a doctoral degree on Territorial and Environmental Planning, who has been working as a Researcher and an Invited Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto – Department of Geography. An integrated member of CEGOT (Centre of Studies on Geography and Spatial Planning), he has worked, published and participated in national and international projects related to the sustainable and equitable development of territories, in various dimensions of urban, regional, transport and environmental planning. He has particularly focused on the how the form and structure of cities are entwined with the distribution of retail establishments, the patterns of active travel and environmental amenities. Concomitantly, he has addressed how these elements of environmental design can contribute to crime-prevention and, most recently, to territorial and social cohesion. He represented Portugal in the COST Action project ‘Crime Prevention through Urban Design and Planning’ (2012-2016), and is currently part of project teams at various planning levels; municipal (the revision of Porto’s Masterplan, PDM), metropolitan (project AMP-SIG), and national (revision of Portugal’s National Plan for Territorial Planning Policies, PNPOT). He is the Lead Researcher of the recently approved project CANVAS - Towards Safer and Attractive Cities: Crime and Violence Prevention through Smart Planning and Artistic Resistance, funded by COMPETE2020 (2018-2021, ¤240.000). He is also the national coordinator of project Erasmus + ‘SWaPOL – Social Work and Policing: Vocational Training in Public Order Management’ (2018-2020, ¤207.000). He has published 8 papers in major Indexed peer-reviewed Journals, 11 papers at conference proceedings and 20 reports; and has spoken in over thirty scientific meetings and supervised 2 completed Master Thesis.
