The use of Geographical Information Systems has been registering, over the last decade, a significant increase in spatial planning, which is materialized by the adoption of this technology in areas as diverse as: environment, transportation, water supplying and waste treatment, agriculture, civil protection, among many others.
One can say that the GIS are a transverse tool, whose employment has generalized to all activity sectors, where location, associated to mobility, are important factors of work rationalization and productivity gains. This course will develop specific competences to answer these new challenges.
Credited with 120 ECTS, the Masters is four semesters long.

Comments
"My basic training is Civil Engineering, an area that has a huge impact on the territory. When I was admitted to the Master’s in Geographical Information Systems and Spatial Planning (MSIGOT), I wanted to acquire new knowledge to improve the management of the built environment. Geographical Information Systems aggregate several techniques and tools to combine data and perspectives, thus providing a holistic view of urban and spatial planning. As the next step in pursuing studies in Geography or complementing studies in other human, scientific and technological areas, MSIGOT is a valuable option with a great future."
David Lourenço - Civil Engineer at the Porto City Council
"The academic and cultural experience I had in MSIGOT was fantastic. I was able to learn from bilingual teachers (Portuguese/English) the concepts, methods and techniques applied in Geography alongside students of different nationalities, each with their unique experiences in GIS in their respective countries, seeking new knowledge to further their education."
Gabriel dos Santos Duarte - Geographer / Senior Geoprocessing Analyst | Environmental Control – Petrobras
"As a former student of the MSIGOT programme, I can really say that this opportunity added tremendous value to both my academic and professional careers. All courses qualified me more than enough to work as Geospatial Analytics Officer at the United Nations Migration Agency (IOM) in Geneva, Switzerland. For two years, studying and working with amazing friendly professors and classmates was the best experience that I am really grateful for."
Mohamed Mohsen Bakr - Geospatial Analytics Officer | The United Nations Migration Agency (IOM) | Geneva, Switzerland
