Born in Porto, she is Full Professor at the Department of Geography at the University of Porto, member of the Centre for Geography and Spatial Planning Studies (CEGOT) and collaborator at the Centre for Research on Territory, Transport and Environment (CITTA and is part of the Biometeorology, Climate and Sustainable Group Urbanism (BCUS) based at the Regional Committee of the Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE). She has a degree in geography, a postgraduate degree in Environmental Impact Assessment from the University of Aberdeen (United Kingdom) and a PhD in Physical Geography from the University of Porto. in physical geography at the University of Porto in 1993, where he also completed his aggregation in 2004.

Has been a National Defence Auditor since 2001.

Was vice-president and president of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto between 1996 and 1998 and between 2003 and 2005 and President and member of the Assembly of Representatives of FLUP for several years.

Is a member of the Ethics Committee of Águas de Portugal by appointment of its President.

Is a member of the Scientific Council of Local SDGs.

From 2009 until 2023, she belonged to the Scientific Committee of the Climatology Group of the International Geographical Union (UGI).

Has been a national representative in several Cost Actions and has collaborated with the European Commission integrating the panel of evaluators of the 7th Framework Program, H2020 and Cost Actions.

Has been member of several FCT evaluator panels. Worked and continues working at the National Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency (A3ES).

Was appointed member of the Geography Thematic Committee and was CAE’s president for evaluating several geography cycles at Portuguese universities.

From 2010 to 2019, was Director of the Master's Degree in Risks, Cities and Spatial Planning and is currently Director of the Master's Course in Challenges of Cities and member of the Board of Directors of the Doctoral Course in Geography at UP.

Is member of the scientific committees of the PhD Course in Geography and the Master's Degree in Risks, Cities and Spatial Planning and the Academic Committee of the Master's Degree in City Challenges.

Was/is a professor in the PhDs in Public Health at UP, in Global Public Health at UNL and in the Masters in Risks, Cities and Spatial Planning and Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Planning.

Has been a guest professor at several national and foreign universities.

Has been coordinator and researcher in more than 30 national and international scientific research projects funded, among others, by the Science and Technology Foundation, the European Science Foundation, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, the Luso-American Foundation for Development, NATO, EEAGrants, the University of Porto, the University of São Paulo, the State University of São Paulo, the CNRS, the Ministère des Affaires Etrangères Français and the British Council.

Has been teaching and carrying out research since 1983 in the areas of urban climatology, bioclimatology, agroclimatology, assessment of environmental impacts, atmospheric pollution, geopolitics, health and quality of life and urban planning, seeking, whenever possible, to transfer the results of his research to society as expressed in the more than 60 published books and book chapters, the more than 100 articles in national and international magazines and the approximately 100 abstracts in the proceedings of national and international colloquiums. Supervised and co-supervised more than 50 national and foreign post-doctoral, doctoral and master's students.

Has participated in more than 30 projects providing services to the community within the scope of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment, Spatial Planning and Ordering and Climatology applied to Spatial Planning and Public Health, of which he stands out most recently collaboration in defining the Strategy for AMP 2020, in the Review of CM Porto's PDM (urban climate, air, water, soil and noise dimension), in the Porto Metropolitan Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change, in the Climate Zoning Charter of Vila Nova de Gaia, in the Porto Road Afforestation Plan, in the Porto Environmental Index Project (Porto Green Factor Project), in the Strategy for Porto Metropolitan Area 2030 (climate change/risk), etc.
