Teaching language

French

Objectives

The main objective of French A1 is to introduce students to the French language and to enable them to master the five competences defined for level A1 by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages in terms of written and oral comprehension and production in an academic context.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester students will be able to

(1) understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic sentences;
(2) interact in a simple way provided the interlocutor speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

Students will also have to develop their own strategies to face challenges when completing tasks and discovering Francophonie. These strategies will help them to monitor their life long learning process.

Working method

Presencial

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)

If necessary, a level at the beginning of the semester will help both student and teacher to decide about the enrolment in the appropriate level (A1 or B1.1).

Program

1. Phonetics: alphabet, pronunciation of phonemes that do not exist in Portuguese, silent endings and liaison between words.

2. Grammatical skills: articles, contraction and elision; possessive and demonstrative determiners; regular and irregular verbs conjugation in the present tense of indicative and imperative moods; future tense (aller + infinitive); introduction to passé composé; plural of nouns; gender and number agreement of adjectives; simple negation; subject and tonic personal pronouns; interrogative sentences.

3. Communicative skills: greeting, farewell and other polite conventions; introducing oneself or someone else; describing oneself and others; making or answering a phone call; expressing likes and dislikes; speaking about daily routine, and personal plans; asking and answering personal questions; asking for and giving information on familiar topics; expressing agreement; locating in time and space; understanding simple written and oral texts; writing short descriptive texts.

The reading of a book may be requested at the beginning of the semester.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Interactive and task-oriented approach.

Students will develop their skills and autonomy by carrying out various tasks, individually or in groups, in order to obtain results to be shared in class.

These tasks include (1) individual search for lexical information to be shared in the form of a glossary; (2) search for information on gastronomy, music and tourism (recipes, flight schedules, entry price and time of a tourist visit, etc.) to be shared in class; (3) preparation and presentation of dialogues; (4) writing of short texts (postcards, self-portraits and portraits, descriptions of daily activities); (5) a group oral presentation on gastronomy, tourism or another topic defined with the teacher.

Eligibility for exams

Students are required to attend 75% of classes. Exceptions according to FLUP regulations.

Calculation formula of final grade

1. Distributed evaluation without final exam ("Epoca Normal"):

Participation: 10% (minimum 75% attendance and 75% of the tasks proposed in class and at home)
Written test: 55% (written comprehension: 10%; language structures: 20%; written production: 25%). [Note: minimum 10/20 to be able to sit for the oral exam]
Oral comprehension: 10%
Individual oral test (continuous production and interaction): 25%.
A passing mark of 8/20 is required for each component of the assessment plan.

2. "Epoca de Recurso" for students who have failed the individual oral test (Distributed evaluation)

Students who have at least 11/20 in the written test will be able to retake only the individual oral test. The calculation formula of final grade is the same as for the "normal" session and a passing mark of 8/20 for the oral test is still required.

3. "Epoca de Recurso" and "Época Especial":

Written exam: 55% (the same as the written test) [Note: minimum 10/20 to be able to sit for the oral exam]
Oral exam: 45% (oral comprehension 10%, continuous production and interaction 35%)
A passing mark of 8/20 is required for each component of the exams.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special status are asked to contact the teacher no later than three weeks after the start of the course to define the assessment components appropriate to each case. After this period, only calculation formula number 3 ("Época de Recurso" and "Época Especial") will apply.

Classification improvement

At the "Recurso" session, students who have passed in distributed evaluation may improve two of the following three assessment components: language structures, written production and oral production. The calculation formula is the same as for distributed evaluation.
