Teaching language

Spanish

Objectives

The students admitted at this level already have a vast linguistic repertoire, so the purpose is to consolidate the knowledge of the language and the culture of the Spanish speaking countries in all their diversity, and to focus on contemporary social themes.

At the end of this course the student must achieve these competences in the following areas:

  • Understanding: To understand without difficulty long texts, both written and spoken, even if they are not clearly structured.

  • Speaking and Writing: To communicate fluently, and be capable of self-correction. Also, to be able to write correctly about complex subjects.

  • Coherence: Students must be able to produce clear, well-structured discourse, showing an adequate use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesion devices.

In short, all this will allow students, by the end of the course, to reach the goals defined by Level C1 (Effective Operational Proficiency) established by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Learning outcomes and competences

The goals of the subject are that students will:

  • can deal with a wide range of long and complex texts in their social, professional or academic life.
  • be able to recognise a wide range of idiomatic and colloquial expressions and appreciate changes of register.
  • can follow an extended discourse even when it is not clearly structured and when relationships are only assumed and not explicitly stated.
  • be able to follow with ease long and complex conversations between third parties, as well as long discussions, lectures and presentations on complex and unfamiliar abstract topics.
  • use language flexibly and effectively for social purposes, including emotional, allusive and humorous uses.
  • express their opinions with fairly precise nuances of meaning, helped by a command of appropriate intonation.
  • in work or academic settings, be able to make presentations and write clear, detailed and well-structured reports on complex subjects, at some length, highlighting the main ideas and defending points of view.
