Objectives

Students are intended to to both deepen the lexicons and master essential grammatical, morphological and syntactical structures of Latin which will, where possible, be related to that Portuguese. Students are also intended to apply this knowledge to the translation into Portuguese of simple (original or adapted) texts and into Latin of small sentences.

At the end of the semester, students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of grammatical and lexical structures studied by translating simple texts (Latin / Portuguese, Portuguese / Latin).

2. The classical Latin pronunciation.

3. The cases and their functions.

4. Morphology.

4.1 Noun inflexion.

4.1.1 Nouns.

4.1.2 Adjectives.

4.1.3 Pronouns: possessive, personal.

4.2 Verbal inflexion

4.2.1 "Infectum"

4.2.2 "Perfectum" (perfect)

4.2.3 The passive voice ("infectum").

5. Syntax

5.1 Coordenate and subordinate clauses.

5.1.1 Subordinate clause: temporal, causal, comparative.

5.2 The agent in the passive.

6. The Latin as a vision of the world: a movement from the concrete towards the abstract.

Calculation formula of final grade

Ordinary Student: - 90% for tests (30% + 60%); - 10% for  presentation and resolution, in class, of texts and works previously defined. Student Worker: - 1st test: 35%; - 2nd test: 65%

NOTE: In the scheme of continuous assessment, the final grades of 8 and 9 are not subject to oral examination.
