Objectives

To study medieval philosophical thought on: a) image; b) events related to the perception and understanding of sensitivity as beauty; c) forms of expression and construction of beauty (art and nature).

To become familiar with medieval authors and texts that are relevant to the study of the topics.

The program has monographic nature, in each year a selected set of texts must be read in depth.

Learning outcomes and competences


The student should be able to identify positions on aesthetics in texts and medieval authors; and became able to to identify the positions of the authors studied, and to understand the different historiographical interpretations about the existence or not of an aesthetic philosophical thought in the Middle Ages.

Program

1. Image. The image in Augustine (the 84 questions, question 74). The outrage of images in Charlemagne’s age (Teodulfo, Libri carolini). The “functions” of image.
2. Light. Shapes and sensitive feelings when experiencing light and colour. Contemplation of shapes in the Book and in the nature of the Middle Ages.
3. Beauty, between nature and art: order, proportion, harmony. The case of music.
4. Understanding the forms of creation and expression of beauty in the Middle Ages.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Seminar work developed based on direct access to sources, in addition to reading and commentary on the texts. Discussion with national and foreign guest lecturers.
