Objectives

Aims: This course aims, first of all, to provide students a series of introductory references on authors, genres and concepts of the history of theatre in Portugal during the 18th and 19th centuries. Secondly, the information will also lead the student to overcome the introductory references and find in them the tools for a full review of the theatre and the history of theatre, dramaturgy, drama theory, a survey of the facts and their interpretation.

Skills: Over the semester, students must be able to: a) reflect on the concepts of “history” and “theatre” in 18th and 19th century Portugal; b)Know and/or recognise some canonical texts on Portuguese playwrights and the so-called “prevalent” genres of the contemporary period, and whenever possible, be aware of limitations of such canonicity; c)Understand the strengths and frailties of national and civilisation concepts of the history of theatre; d) assess the variety and vitality, and rhetoric and aesthetics of dramas and texts on the Portuguese theatre.

Program

I. Introduction: the histories of the theatre
1. “Homo sapiens” and “Homo ludens”: prides and prejudices.
2. Theatre and literature. From paraliterature to paratheatre? “Paradramaturgy” and “theatricality”.
3. History, theatre and the physical problems of the representation of time.

c) Correia Garção: universal reason vs. popular feeling.
2. The 19th century and the labyrinths of “icastic memesis”
a) Almeida Garrett: the project of a national theatre and of a hybrid genre;
b) Francisco Gomes Amorim: the romantic/ultra-romantic/naturalist drama and the revolution of melodrama;
c) Mendes Leal: romantic drama, naturalist drama and the social role of the theatre.
3. The 19th century and the return to Aristotelian issues:
