Objectives

The programme presented here for Romanian Language I – Optional Course/ Beginners’ Level at Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto – is directed at a target audience whose vocational training is essentially intended to continue the study of languages, with a weekly time-table of 4 hours which amounts to about 80 hours per year. Thus, it assumes a specific orientation defined on behalf of the students’ vocational training, allowing them to develop their skills and understandings and, at the same time, providing them with instruction in the social and personal dimensions.

Subject’s objectives and purposes
To develop students’ interpretative and writing skills, showing a growing autonomy in using communicative skills.
To provide students with the essential outputs so as to continue with their studies upon completing this subject.

Program

Programmatic contents
The programmatic contents are organized in three different, but integrated, components: Interpretation and Text Production, Socio-Cultural Dimensions, Romanian Language.

Interpretation and Text Production will be the primary focus of the programme. Within this perspective, it is fundamental that students are provided with opportunities to interpret and produce a variety of texts in which the formal, semantic and pragmatic dimensions of the language should be worked on in an integrated manner.

Within the scope of the Sociocultural Dimension, the target will be to mobilize and integrate several skills, from which the linguistic, discursive, strategic and socio-cultural skills are enhanced. Students are encouraged to broaden their knowledge, by becoming aware of other cultural universes, other lifestyles and other ways of seeing the world. We will encourage students to an open-minded and reflective attitude in the contacts they have established, by urging them to explore new areas of cultural and linguistic knowledge.

In relation to the component concerning the Romanian Language, we shall proceed with the systematic exploration of the basic aspects of the linguistic structures, in a cyclical process, rooted in the continuous application of the understandings to be acquired. It is pointed out that the study of grammar, within the range of the regulating spheres put forward for consideration, should not be separated from the processes of interpretation and production of sense. That is to say, grammar does not come to light as a tight, decontextualized subject matter with no pragmatic scope, but integrated into the remaining components of the programme. The component that concerns the Romanian Language will comprise the same approach as that of the components mentioned previously, however, it may, at the proper time, claim the status of a focalized object of study, in the sense of a greater meta linguistic awareness form the part of the students, taking into consideration the target audience for whom this subject is intended.

Complementary Bibliography

This section provides a list of Internet resources so as to introduce students to the Romanian socio-cultural world. This list could go on forever and students will certainly be able to search other relevant websites by themselves, if they are interested. We suggest that students do some research on the potentialities of communicative discourse through the Internet, of the same nature as the so-called “hypertext”, an interactive non-sequential writing, which allows for students to question what they read, select the information they seek and explore the aspects that they are most interested in.
